Congratulations to both Joel Cross and Mark McKenzie for sharing the honours of this award this year. Cross earnt three votes to tie with McKenzie, who did not poll a vote vs Port last weekend. Since the Advertiser recommenced its' award in 1994, it is the first time a South player has won the award, while McKenzie becomes the fourth Eagles player to receive it. How many points were they awarded?

Is it known as the Adv POTY or as the Merve agars Medal SANFL these days? I've lost track

19 votes each; and it's not the Merv Agars award, I think that's the Crows/Port players one.

Quick answer: Umpires
I'm just talking prestige, I could name every Magarey Medalist since the 60s but I dont even know who won last year's Advertiser Player of the Year. God, I haven't even heard of one of this years winners.
And although I don't give umpires much credit I give Advertiser journos even less, so give me the umpires. From the little bits I've read this year the Advertiser journos have less idea than most people on here, I'm still looking forward to the Andy Otten v Dean Cox match up this coming weekend.

I think the AFL have a much better system with the MVP award. It'd be good if the SANFL could do something similar.

Personally, regardless of the quality if the journalists on offer I think the umpires are not the best people to give out awards or votes so I agree, the AFL MVP is a very good assesment of the best players in any given season.

In this case, I'd just side with the umpires though too. Just.

Incredible to think that for all of Central District's dominance over the past decade and beyond, they haven't had a player win this award and only one win the Magarey. Speaks volume this, not having a superstar to be so heavily reliant on, and the sheer depth they possess has paved the way to their incredible team success. This year itself highlights it more than anything. So many injuries and so many additional players required to tow the line and they've done quite well.

I know beggars can't be choosers, and it's fantastic to see a South player joint-win it, but I'd much rather a premiership. :(

The guys that vote for the R O Shearman award are good judges[these are the guys who have played 200 games or thereabouts]
Im going to mention James Allan in 2010
The Advertiser from memory had an article on the top sanfl players thingermajib in 2010
This is how 2010 went
MAGAREY MEDAL James Allan
RO SHEARMAN MEDAL James Allan
ADVERTISER TOP THINGERMAJIB James Allan didnt finish top 3, from memory did he finished closer to 10th ?
How on earth Jimmy was listed about 7th or 8th is baffling if thats right

James Allan is the best performed SANFL footballer for several years now, and deserves the medal again
The RO Shearman voters have got it right
I venture to say that he has won the R.O.S award 4 years in a row ?

What ever happened to Ryan O'Connor after he left the SANFL? I remmeber him being reasonably dominant.

Went back to Melbourne but not quite sure how much longer if he played footy back there?

I know he also moved on to an Adminstration role and was General Manager at Coburg Football Club from memory.
