Our strategic priorities are towards the Paralympics and women’s sport.

Imagine the uproar if they said their priorities were on male sports

Televised organic basket weaving, also falling way down on the list of broadcasting priorities.

The ABC charter clearly states that its role is to:

"(i) broadcasting programs that contribute to a sense of national identity and inform and entertain, and reflect the cultural diversity of, the Australian community"

Nowhere, does it say, provide a forum and medium for the Chattering Classes, nowhere.

Obviously ratings aren't that important.

SANFL contributes $60,000 each year, how much does it cost the ABC,as much i would like the coverage to continue i can understand the financial burden on the ABC.

This might help. Quotes the Tasmanian State League case, but might give a rough idea.

http://www.crikey.com.au/2011/09/19/leaks-shows-local-footy-costs-cash-strapped-abc-22-per-viewer

This article throws around a few figures and quotes around the production and programming issue as a whole.

"The cash-strapped ABC is spending a massive $22 per viewer each week of the season to bring Tasmanian football to a tiny audience of about 3000, reveal figures leaked to Crikey."

"The leaked figures show that nationwide, the cost of covering local football is $2.63 per viewer per episode, or $469,000 per episode."

and this

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/entertainment/tv/abc-wants-more-cash-to-televise-local-footy/story-e6freeul-1226144084293

"On Thursday (22/9), ABC managing director Mark Scott was forced to rethink his strategy of calling off negotiations for further coverage of rugby league telecasts in NSW and Australian Rules football in Victoria, SA, WA and Tasmania - albeit with cap in hand seeking more money for the sports' current contributions to telecasts.

"But for long-suffering ABC production staff who contacted The Advertiser this week, the debate is not just about football, but the broader issue of the battle for so-called "BAPH in-house production". This is the maintenance of jobs in what the Sydney-centric organisation disparagingly calls the BAPH - Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart - states."

FWIW, Mr Chandler recently (Thursday afternoon, 22/9) said on 891 that the SANFL contribution was closer to $70k all up. I think scaffolding was mentioned (?)

Earlier, SANFL general manager of football and corporate operations Darren Chandler told the committee that the first week of finals this year the SANFL out-rated every other television channel after 5.30pm.

Mr Chandler said the SANFL was fearful it would be asked to contribute more to telecasts when it meets the ABC soon. The SANFL provides $70,000 a year for the coverage.

According to David Knox in the comments for yesterday's TV ratings, the SANFL Grand Final got 97,000 viewers:

Wedgie, I would've thought those ratings figures were pretty good. That's about 1 in every 15 people in the whole state.

It's really good. I get sent the TV ratings for all of Australia each day and 100000 for a show only shown in one state is excellent.
