Bloods suspend errant players

DOUG ROBERTSON
Article from: The Advertiser

WEST Adelaide has stood down league players tomorrow among an unknown number of players suspended because they broke discipline last week in a show of will from the match committee.
Bloods coach Wayne Weidemann has refused to select the players in league or reserves to face Sturt in their SANFL season opener at Richmond tomorrow. West refused to name the players involved but star recruit Damian Cupido was named in the league team in The Advertiser yesterday but his name was omitted from the "updated" team released later.

The Power's Ryan Willits, who switched from Glenelg yesterday, will debut in Cupido's spot while Crows ruckman Kurt Tippett comes in on the bench, forcing out untried Matt Lutze.

West football manager Scott Turner would not say if Cupido was injured but simply said: "He won't play."

The errant players are said to have ignored the night curfew and over-indulged with alcohol after Saturday's successful club season launch. The Bloods are taking the strong stand in a bid to break the "party boys" tag that has dogged West. Weidemann admitted the move on the eve of the season opener was "not the best timing" but he said it was right.

"I'm pretty comfortable about this," he said. "We have a players' code conceived with a lot of input from the leadership group and a group of players have gone outside that code. The players know the rules and as a consequence that group will be stood down. This (action) has the strong backing of the board. We're making a statement. Whether they're a senior player or someone new to the footy club, everybody has got to stand by the rules."

Weidemann dismissed gossip the stand-downs resulted from a brawl involving players while West was in Hobart for a trial game two weeks ago. He said: "It won't happen again, I can assure you of that. We won't be making any comment on who is involved. It's been handled well in-house."

Well done to West Adelaide for making a stand with repect off field discipline, methinks in the past certain league players at Westies wouldn't have been pulled into line in this instance becasue of their profile.

A step in the right direction IMHO.

Cupidoll how many times does he have to be told, Brisbane, Essendon, Bendigo, South (where he was unfit) and now Westies??? One would hope he gets the message but based on the previous eight years, as Jack Dyer would say, "I don't think this leopard is about to change his stripes"
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Can you put the 2's up for me Dash.

Little wisper on Pia not playing. Obviously the Crows are taking Porp's to Melb as an emergency. He would be better served playing this one.

Depending on what your typo was there I might have to re-evaluate which game I go to on Saturday.
