That the Govt should have nominated a Labor member. Instead they took a vote away Liberal, and gained another.
And Pyne's nomination for Anna Burke was not good enough, yet they accepted her as Deputy.

Does the name Mal Colston mean anything to you?

Wiping out 110 years of Westminster tradition along with it.

That's just not correct IMO, MP.

It's interesting that CK started a thread about political history, because when that reaches 1975, so many Westminster traditions were broken by the Liberal Party that further discussion about trashing Westminster traditions would be irrelevant.

Following that, Mr Howard enticed Senator Colston to rat on the ALP and installed him as Senate Deputy President (a precedent).

As it happens, Mr Slipper was about to be shafted by the Lib machine and not pre-selected and he is now an Independent rat. You would think that in a Parliament so finely balanced, Mr Abbott would shore up his numbers, not put one of them totally offside.

Dumb.

Again.

As it stands, the Government now has two years to govern, barring unforeseen circumstances (which can happen in politics any time).

Re fish's clip:
I've said before that I'm not a fan of Tony Abbott but I wouldn't have answered the interviewer either.
It wasn't a sensitive remark for Abbott to make when he did, even though it was basically true.
It was too simplistic a response and not supportive enough to the needs of the mourners - he should have thought before putting his mouth into gear.

However, it was even less sensitive to rehash it in the media so they keep having to hear it.
And the interviewer must know that it was being done as a media attention grabber (or for other political purposes) not just to point out Abbott's error to him.
So, he didn't really need an answer, and answering would have been playing into his hands by prolonging the rehash.

Re the break with Speaker tradition:
Slipper was under pressure from Liberal colleagues to resign over the series of issues involving travel and electorate allowances.
He has made a deal that saves his neck, gives him a raise, and gives the ALP breathing space.
In his speech he dressed it with a little "noble" spin about the virtues of having an independent speaker..
I expect the issues will now "go away" as part of the deal.
