Supporters rankings of the league coaches

Since it's round 2 and the time for wild celebration by the teams who have jagged wins, and talk of doom and gloom by the rest of the comp, I was wondering where people ranked the coaches. This is my list, wildly biased of course.

1. Roy Laird. Only blot is one GF loss after picking up the team late. Seeing the dogs through a supposed "rebuilding phase" with a GF appearance and flag favourtism. Always seems to have an intelligent answer to every question asked, figuratively and literally.
2. Daylight.
3. Ron Fuller. Finally cracking the flag means I have to put him here instead of 6th or so. Disappointed he went with the same losing formula instead of trying new things (although Colville helped this somewhat by not playing - master stroke!), but you can't do more than win.
4. Jarman. Needs to find finals win. Full stop. Roosters will slide back quicker if they don't get closer to the prize, but IMO as a lot of credits for taking a basket case to perennial finalists and possible flag fancies.
5. Ginever. Didn't have to do much to make the last finals position here, which makes sense (unless you notice I have no #2) since the 5th team in the finals gets smashed most years after only just scraping in. Has got Port, unfortunately, back into the finals every year.
6. Mickan. I just like the way he got Glenelg to play more attacking football last season. Backwell finally got asked to play in front of the play instead of behind, although doesn't have the cattle to do more. Needed to recruit or develop better to be a genuine threat, and will need to do well to get Glenelg in the 5 this season.
7. Trevor Hill. Hasn't really done anything, which puts him ahead of the guy I don't rate, the guy who has done less and the guy whose team can't win.
8. Ricky MacGowan. I expect him to pass Hill in a few weeks (because he's a Centrals guy) and might just do the unthinkable and lift Sturt to, dare we say it, finals contenders. 2 wins is enough for me to elevate him past the Weed and Pyman.
9. Pyman. I want to put him last, but he did make the finals last season. For a guy who has got South to open the cheque book like he has(you gotta feel for Anderson), South have struggled to even make the 5, and the way he had them playing I'd have backed most reserves teams to knock them off. Made many senior players leave or ask to be let out of their contract.
10. Weidemann. Has a similar League record to me, except a lot more losses. Hasn't got the players, got the wrong players and needs to address the personnel problems because if they don't get better players down there somehow the comp will have 2 byes most weeks.

In all honesty I think the top 8 coaches have all done a pretty good job with what they've had.

Purely speculative, yet here is my list based on improvement across the board,

1. Andrew Jarman, hasnt had the ultimate prize, yet I feel he has made the most improvement at any SANFL club.

2. Roy Laird, Central have gone from strength to strength and he is keeping the window of opportunity wedged firmly open.

3. Wayne Weidemann, Has the hardest challenge of any SANFL coach at present, yet has already proven that he has the balls to make the hard decisions that will set Westies up for the future.

4. Ron Fuller, like a Hammer on Cold Steel, chips away over time and gets a result, has had a lot of heartbreak doing it though and often hasnt had the full support of supposed supporters.

5. Robert Pyman, Finally got South to the finals, great effort, yet needs to take that further this year to be taken seriously, if South burn this year will no doubt be sacked and the club will go back on the cycle yet again.

6. Tim Ginever, great personality and has heaps to offer Port, hard to make a real assesment as he has been in Johh Cahills shadow, yet I think your Tab money is safe on a Port finals campaign this year which will soon prove his worth to the club.

7. Trevor Hill, I get the nasty feeling that some in the club are quietly watching Michael Aish serve his apprenticeship at Westies and plan to move on him, treating Hill as a cartaker coach in the meantime, which is unfortuate, he has alot to offer Norwood if given a fair go.

8, Mark Mickan, Close but no Cigars last year, club has been through a lot with coaches over the past few years, hopefully they will give him another year which I think he will need to get the team to more depth to take things further.

Rick Macgowan, still to early to tell, promising signs though! Once each team has played each other once I would think their wins would outnumber their losses, some of the other SANFL clubs may soon wonder how they missed getting him onto their staff!

Agreed too early to call on MacGowan, but I think his rating is likely to be favourable by seasons end.

Aerie I feel he is doing a top job with the side that he has and it is an improvement. Whilst Westies have recruited well it is the same old story. We are losing games if sturt had of just lost both of their games I still would put him second. He has Sturt showing something with little recruiting and kids.

OK. I still think it is too early to judge MacGowan that high after only two games. Mine...

1. Laird & Fuller - Both premiership coaches, Laird has continued on from his predecessors, Fuller has taken the Eagles to a level they have never achieved before.
3. Jarman - has taken a side from nothing to consistent finalists with improvement each year.
4. Pyman - a lot will ride on how South performs this year, but expect things will improve starting this week vs Norwood.
5. Ginever - needs to find consistency for his team, seems to get the best out of them some weeks and the next week they fall in a heap.
6. Mickan - has done well with Glenelg last year and the Eagles in previous years. A proven coach who gets the best out of his squad.
7. MacGowan - has done little at this stage but above the other two due to them being in the negative.
8. Hill - sure, he doesn't have everything at his disposal like a Laird, Fuller, Ginever or Jarman, but still has Norwood playing a game plan which just doesn't work.
9. Weidemann - only a matter of time before he gets shown the door.

tough job to rate given that some coaches have only began their SANFL coaching journey

2. Ron Fuller, current Premiership coach, I admire his courage to keep persisting
3. Daylight
4. Andrew Jarman, only based on his last two years minor round win / loss ratio, but he has plenty to do to convince me that he has the game plan to win finals
equal 5th Tim Ginever, Pyman and Mickan, these guys are hard to split, Port and South made 2006 finals with good lists, while the Bays were unlucky to miss with a young team
6. Rick Macgowan, great start but hard to rank just two games in to a coaching career
7. Trevor Hill, as per Rick's comment
8. Wayne Weidemann, based on win / loss ration

Actually, I was thinking that very thing myself. I would have thought the SANFL would be a very good place to learn how to manage a team and club for any prospective AFL coaches. Over the course of the last 15 years, which coaches out of the many there have been would be considered good? Centrals have luckily always had a good coach in that time (which I don't think is mere coincidence), but many clubs have had one or several terrible coaches. Where are the SANFL champions who would once have been the first port of call for clubs gone? What of former AFL players looking for a gig? Is the media pulling all the top cantidates these days?

A lot of the lists match the premiership table of the last few years. Prob makes sense but leads to my hypothetical ... if Weed coached the current Bulldogs list would they still be top?

I think a lot try to get in to the AFL system as assistant coaches as early as they can which drains the talent pool. 20 years ago each VFL team had 1 coach, now they have 5 or more per team so maybe less to go around the other comps.

Aerie Sturt have now won three in a row and beaten port if only just. I feel that Macgowan is showing something at Sturt I know it is early days yet but i wouldn't write Sturt off.
