I totally agree Mr Beefy. Get to the ball first and you generally get the benefit of the umpiring. However I guess what bemuses me the most like most occasions is the inconsistent nature of the decisions. As I've said previously though I'm not using umpiring as an excuse for our loss. We were outclassed by an amazing Magpie time from the first to the last siren. They thoroughly deserved their win and if anything the scoreboard probably flattered the eags in the end. Should have been a much bigger loss.

On a positive note the eags did win a quarter of footy even if it was the last. 4.2 - 2.2

Surely you can't be blaming the sprinklers for stopping Port's run. Hadn't the Eagles already kicked 2-0 by the time that happened.

Not too many positives to take from that game. I thought Eddy and Shirley showed enough to suggest they'll be very good pick ups this year. I think we'll need another marking option to go with Grocke and Staple in the forward line. Whether that be a Treeby/Westbrook type or a genuine tall forward I'm not sure - what have we got? Also the 2nd ruck is a huge issue. Will some of the players that became stars at finals time last year be consistent league players throughout the season (the likes of Raymond, Day etc.) or will they go back to being fringe types?

I thought Parry played well and Grieger was good at Full Back. The Port midfield dominated - Ryan McKenzie (number 11) looks to be a quality pick up. Port played great footy last night and look to have a good combination of midfield depth and dangerous forwards to challenge this year.

Lots of work to do. Nothing like an opening round thumping to bring a club and it's supporters back to earth! It all starts again against Norwood in Round 3.

The winning team generally gets more free kicks when I look at the stats each week, particularly when they win comfortably.
Indeed it should have been a bigger loss. Indictment of Port really that they didn't win by more.

Now is the time for Sam Heinjus or Zac Fitzgerald. Probably then going to need a crumbing player then too, as obviously Westy and Treeby were reasonable on the ground too.
Agree on the second ruck, reckon we'll still see a fair bit if Redden this year, but maybe not after this one.

Agreed Ruck is a massive problem.

If the Stats posted earlier are correct then Bock having 3 hitouts is disgraceful. Someone of Grocke's height could have gone into the ruck and done just as well and he wouldn't have been a liability around the ground.

Last year in the early to mid season we were really struggling with Bock in the side. It was the case of us playing aright when Parry was on the ground but getting belted whenever Bock came onto the ground. Eventually he got dropped and Hoban came into the side from about mid-season till end of minor round and we did much better. I understand he is sick or injured at the moment so he won't be an in for a while. I'm not expecting Redden to get dropped anytime soon from the Power either. With little in the reserves as backup I'm afraid we are stuck with Bock for the time being unless they want to use Grocke to pinch hit in the ruck.

As for the game, we were continuously behind the Port players, misjudging the flight of the ball and failed to go in hard. Probably not as many ridiculous errors as the Sturt game last year but still up there with one of the worst matches we've played in the last 5 years. Port look really, really good. I don't know if that is the best team they could put on the deck at the moment but they seem to have a good blend of bigs and smalls and have a bit of pace.

It was for head high contact, bit of chest to chest as the port boys celebrated and the eagles player pushed 1 in the head/face.

Pies, sausage rolls, steak sangas and anything else he could find...

Unlike Bock, who looked like he could snap at any minute
