What's going on with Hilly...

Postby grassroots31 » Mon Apr 23, 2007 12:44 pm

From outset big fan of Hilly..no ego..quiet bloke actually in terms of pure coaching mechanics probably fairly up there'

Motivating Norwood maybe where he falls down

The beauty about Noarlunga is that you can get closer to the huddle than perhaps you can normally due to the poisitioning of the centre square

The Legs boys broke into their groups at quarter and three quarter time but there didn't happen to be a huge amount of assistance/assistants..

Scotty Bassett was having a chat but apart from that Hilly didn't really seem to collate with anyone...Jamie mason seemingly had no involvement

Do we not have the money for some assistants...Got told that Macca broke down in that he had too many yes men around him when he was coach...Mick Weatherald seems to be Hillys off sider but there appears to be a lack of gruff/mongrels to question/challenge Trev...

Also concerning is that he almost seems to be nervous around his players...dunno

While Im not chuffed with the start Im not convinced anybody could do any better with a squad with no mongrel in it anyway..

Id rather the legs get flogged by ten goals everyweek with a side of kids that really barelled in..the current squad is not not trying but is not what we need to break the mould

just quickly moderators and readers poll question is not a massive dig at players but a reference to my favorite quote about coaching from Chris Connolly on why Freo were taking a long time to be successful...we aint got the cattle pure and simple

Norwood needs better cattle, no doubt about it, but the cattle that is there aint THAT bad ... Trevor is either employing a poor gameplan that will never get us the results we desire, or doesn't have the Cajoles to make tough enough selections to enforce the style of play he wants ... Either way a large chunk of our problem rests at his feet imho.

Love him or hate him, Dale Lewis had a similar (some will argue lesser, some will argue better) squad playing better football IMHO by the end of his only year, probably as a result of making the tough calls and forcing players, regardless of their ability, name or reputation to earn a guernsey or suffer the consequences!

IMHO Norwood are persevering with the model Glenelg tried in 2005, a technically good coach with good ideas for amateur and junior level footy but not SANFL league footy.

IMHO a league coach needs to have a been a good/great SANFL player or have played AFL footy as part of their CV especially if they are an outsider to the club (a la Simmonds and Hill with Glenelg and Norwood). Laird hasn't got a great SANFl record but he is coaching at the club he played adn has been an assistant for a long period of time.

The reason why they need a good playing background as part of their CV is to be able to establish credibility with the players in this is how we are going to play and operate at this footy club.

One of the people Norwood have got is Mick Weatherald a more knowledgeable person on footy techniques, skills and tactics you would struggle to meet. Great bloke only played 19s at sturt becasue he couldn't crack their senior list in their great era of dominace (no mean feat) but won three Mail medals in the Hills. He in many ways was the brains behind Sturts revival in the late 90s but the message always came from Phil not him. In my year at sturt in teh huddles Phil would talk generally to the players then turn and say (to Mick and Mocca), "Okay what are we doing now?" Mick or Mocca would then say the changes positionally and tactically. Phil would then repeat those to the palyers (occasionally he would change them if he felt he wanted to).

Players used to tease Mick at Sturt as he would put up match reviews and notes on upcoming games. Once an old article (from teh Hills rag) on him was pinned up on the players noticeboard and on it someone scribbled, "but how many league games did you play...???"

My point is Footballers and socieity are much different to 20 years ago when authority wasn't questioned as much, now players and society innately ask, "why should I listen to you what have you done to be able to tell me what to do", if you haven't got "cred" it is harder to inluence/lead a group to follow you, no matter how good your knowledge on footy might be....

Its a fine line clubs need to tread, too good a coach with a great playing playing background he is likely to be pinched by the AFL. Get a coach with no real AFL prospects he is likely to struggle to lead and manage his players as Glenelg found in 2001-02 and 2005.

Also as is well documented club and footy legends do not necessary make good coaches.

Now I'm sure some players take in everything Trevor Hill says but I bet there are others who sometimes inwardly question the message and play accordingly. In league footy if only 10% players aren't pulling* in the same direction as everyone else you are bound to struggle as Glenelg have demonstrated for the last 10 years.

As i said IMO

Dale Lewis was clearly a superior coach, he made the tough decisions which Hill can't.

Maybe you get what you pay for. Norwood may not be in a position at the moment to pay for a more qualified coach .... that's pure speculation from an outsider before the Norwood fans jump on me! I'll stand corrected.

But Tassie, Trevor Hill WAS a highly credentialled SANFL League Player. In a quality era when North Adelaide were struggling >1975<1981 he was a quality State player on a wing in a quality State Team. He was also an assistant coach at North Adelaide in the early 2000s.

Nothing against Trevor Hill as I dont know enough about his coaching style etc but its interesting that the Norwood hierachy appointed him and didnt even interview Rick Macgowan who was interested. Apparently Hill was 2nd pick behind Lewis the year before and this weighed heavily in his favour the following year.

You get what you pay for!! Like Easter Eggs from Cheap as Chips - the wrapping promises much but the chocolate tastes like @#*&! Norwood had a coach who was prepared to make the hard decisions, this made him unpopular with the "boy's club" so he was ousted. His name was Dale Lewis.
If we dont make the 5 (we wont) and when the board realise their mistake I hope we get a "bastard" with the balls to make the changes we need!

Trevor Hill will be replaced at the end of 2007. Just a matter of by who. Primus is a name I have heard mentioned recently as a contender to replace. Along with the previously mentioned Aish and Jars (if available).

I get the feeling that some at Norwood are watching one of their favourite sons Michael Aish serve his apprenticeship at Westies with interest, I dont mean any offence to Trevor Hill either, yet I wont be surprised if an "unofficial" approach is made to Aish at some stage soon if it has'nt already.

Hopefully he says no, he would do well at South!

it dosn't matter who coaches norwood their problem isn't 'getting the ball' but kicking a big enough score to win, what they need is a big strong marking full forward that is capable of kicking 80+ goals a year, yes vlatko kicked some goals yesterday but is not a strong marking forward sure he took a 'hanger' yesterday in the 3rd quarter but he also dropped 3 first quarter 'easy' marks so as i said it doesn't matter who coaches norwood because if you can not kick big enough scores you wont win many games but if they got a 80+ goal forward they'd be a top 5 side

Didn't they use Cockshell in defence on the weekend? Possibly playing people out of position?

Yeah they did, as an over reation to Twomeys performance against there last year ... Should have been switched with Gibson relatively early in the piece, but hard to go the coach on that as Cockshell hurt himself fairly early in the game.

Bayman, yes Vlatko did drop 2 or 3 easy marks a forward should take in that first quarter so no excuses for that, but how poor was the delivery from the midfielders when they were under the pump?
