"Off-air" cricket commentary

Postby spell_check » Thu Jan 26, 2006 11:18 pm

I found this one somewhere on the web.

What about Tony Greig commentating on Channel Nine during a Mercantile Mutual match (now ING Cup) at the North Sydney Oval in the mid-90's. Between overs, the camera scanned across to show a wedding taking place in the adjacent gardens, between a white groom and bride of Asian appearance.

Thinking he was in the middle of a commercial break, he said something like "here we go, another arranged marriage. She was probably flown in, yesterday...oh look at her, she's not bad for a mail-order bride".

Not surprisingly, he got into a lot of trouble

Why even bring shit like this back up again. Do you have any reason or topic behind this to bring it up.

Well if ever Tony Greig had immunity from the Channel "survivor" Nine commentary box that proved it, Rod Marsh criticised one -day cricket in 1990, he got turfed. Tony Greig racially vilifies a person......
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I don't think I have seen this before, so it's not again.

Yes, this is a topic where you can post other "off-air" commentary moments like when Ian Chappell asked "Is this F***ing microphone on", to which the reply was yes.

Got a feeling Marsh had done wrong by Packer prior to that so I think they were looking for an excuse at that stage.

In my opinion the channel nine commentary team needs a bit of a clean out. Too many old farts who have been there too long.

Maybe channel 9 can get some fresh blood in the box now that KP is no longer with us.

Pretty sure it was the 1989 Ashes tour. He was forced to make an on air apology. Quite amusing

I was actually watching the Mercantile Mutual Cup game when Tony Greig made his comment. SA vs. NSW at North Sydney Oval. At the time i did think he was pretty game making that remark. Pissed myself laughing though

Chappelli has dropped the 'f' word twice on air.

The first time was in 1981 when he was co-hosting Wide World of Sports with Mike Gibson.

They were watching some clip and Chappelli, thinking he was off-air, remarked:

"Jesus f***in Christ!"

Technically, it was the first time the 'f' word was said on Australian television.

Graham Kennedy said 'Faaark' if you remember.

That was hilarious! Mods - what a star.

Rex and co. were stunned - didn't know what to do.

At least the Channel 9 goons would have had a laugh about it.

From my memory it wasn't Rex, it was Bruce in 1993 after Modra had ckicked his 100th goal against Fitzroy at Princess Park. Bruce followed the ol TV dictum, keep pressing on and pretend it didn't happen

Big Tone spent the whole time looking at the floor I reckon.....
