Can we please just have an election now. This Government is just in care taker mode as we know the majority of the population just want a change. Lets get the Liberals in and not muck around installing the Carbon Tax. We should be one of the wealthiest countries in the world, however under labour we are well on the way to self distruction. PS: I voted labour at the last election, won’t EVER be making that mistake again.

Sounds like Anthony Toop's w@nk in last Saturday's Advertiser - property isn't selling because we are still in "election mode" after the close 2010 vote and peopl are afraid to commit to buying a house because of the carbon tax so the government should call an election, ie we need a Liberal gov. So the property industry is so important it should dictate politics in this country

The News Limited Liberal love fest is a joke. One of the biggest reasons I don't buy the Herald Run here in Melbourne. (btw I am not a Labor man either.) Abbott would send this country down quicker than Labor has because the people behind Tony and Tony himself have no idea on how to run the country come to think of it neither does Labor.

Agree about Abbott. Find it hard to believe he has been allowed to be Liberal leader for so long. But perhaps the rest of that thought is best left for another time.

I will give the Libs a prop that they haven't had as much infighting as Labor has. Problem is IF we went to the election tomorrow it is a Gimme that Libs will win here lies the biggest problem would Abbott get rid of the lovely Carbon Tax. I seriously doubt he will.

Not as much infighting in recent years perhaps, but they've still had their fair share over the years - Turnbull/Nelson/Abbott; Howard/Peacock; Howard/Downer/Costello.

True, about Labor's infighting. No good at the best of time, but especially so in the public's eyes at a time when the world is in such a state of uncertainty and we need stronger leadership. You're right, Strawb, that it seems like the Libs would sh!t it in, but would that be for the right reasons?

Honestly no the problem lies in Queensland who had a hissy fit over K Rudd being dumped. Western Australia has the problem of the mines are all there and they feel the mining tax is all wrong. Also I just don't trust the Libs on work choices. I feel Abbott will bring in harder work conditions than before. Are the current State Liberal parties in government doing a good job. Here in Victoria it is a no, Bellyache has not done one promise and has of course cut spending. Victoria is losing more jobs than any other state and the Libs are doing nothing about it.

Reflection:

The Cwlth govt has an awful lot of discretionary spending power if it is able to turn around a $44bn deficit to a $1.5bn forecast surplus.

If we accept that there is indeed a lot of discretionary spending power, then what questions does this pose for the economic credibility of the two major parties (historically and presently), and what are the answers?

One obvious answer is that a lot of discretion has been exercised to either bring forward spending to this f/y, or defer it to the 2013/14 f/y, to make 2012/13 almost a stand alone budgetary year. eg $5bn is defence deferments, or, $3.6bn promised to duplicate the Pacific Hwy IF the NSW Govt matches it.

maybe it does lie in queensland, but if your own home grown son so to speak was out voted from the party he was leading, not the voters who voted him in, then what would you do?

Concessional super contributions capped at $25,000 per year for everyone. How do people save for retirement if they can't get their money into super?

Sorry to disappoint that Mick is not me. I did not vote Labor in 2007 so am not responsible in any way for the current schemozzle. I have voted Labor once, for Bob Hawke in 1983. I even voted for the senate ticket of the Nuclear Disarmanant Party that was asssociated with Peter Garrett in the 1980s, probably as a result of living in Berlin in the early 80s when Mr Reagan was sabre rattling regularly. On Mr Bolt his job is to annoy lefties, he does this very well, occassionally he writes something half decent, like the recent summary of this confidence trick masquerading as a budget.

PS If you see Mick of Walkerville that will be me

Hitler was a vegetarian, so he would have eaten yoghurt I'm guessing. He was also a non smoker and non drinker. These days he'd be a straight edge punk.

Want to to get a surplus? Increase taxes and cut back on public services. Done.
Howard/Costello were the masters of this form of smoke and mirrors.
