As I said I have met and talked to MJF so I have some observations to base my opinion of her condition on.
It is not guesswork, based only on the media and hearsay.

I can say what I think here, because I have no treatment relationship with her, and she has been open about her illness already.
I also know the doctor treating her and his level of competence.

I have not discussed her case with him - that would be unethical for both of us without her consent.
(And I wouldn't want to get involved in that even with it, as I may have a conflict of interest at some future time as a party member.)

OK you don't care about the real medical and legal issues.

......Legal issues coming from a guy who still says not the dingo but the kid did it .

I don't know M.J.F. My thoughts on her leaving the senate are judged by her actions , public statements and policy support over her whole time in the senate .....She can tell her story walking for all I give a S**T.

If I wanted expert medicial or legal advice I would not be seeking it on an internet forum site for football followers

Psyber, clearly I bow to your greater medical knowledge and experience, however I am struggling with how you can say you would rush to Thompson's defense only after a "full and thorough assessment" but will defend MJF after a brief chat on the one occasion you've met her.

I tend to believe her to an extent. Doing it again for $60 worth of groceries isn't the behaviour of a normal person. The risk of her political career, further publicity and ridicule plus the chances of another court case for $60 of groceries makes no sense to me. However, I do think she was out of line in her accusation of the police. They were investigating an incident, which is their job. She should have taken it more gracefully if she didn't want things to continue. Hope she does get help though, but politics is not the place to be if you are having troubles with a mental illness.

Sorry I didn't make it clear that I was thinking then in terms of giving evidence in court for a defence, where you have to have been very thorough.
I could form some sort of an opinion after talking to him for say half an hour, probably sufficient to talk over probabilities with, say, his GP, if he were referred.
But that is not enough to express an opinion in a court situation.

Normally you allow an hour for a first assessment of any patient with any Mental Health condition.
Sometimes, when symptoms are marginal, you need more than one interview, or even a period in hospital under observation.

With MJF, what she described and what I could see in group interaction made the diagnosis pretty obvious.
It was quite consistent with the defence publicly presented in court.
(And if it wasn't already put in the public there, I wouldn't have said anything here.)

NOMINATIONS for the Senate vacancy left by the resignation of Senator Mary Jo Fisher open today with two key contenders emerging.

They are the right wing’s preferred nominee Kate Raggatt and the left’s Anne Ruston.

Supporters of 49-year-old Ruston, a Riverland rose grower, are disappointed that her previously approved nomination to the number three spot on the Senate ticket for the 2013 election is insufficient for her to progress automatically to the vacancy.

“That would have been a seamless way to do it – now we’re in for the usual factional carry on,” State MP Tim Whetstone said.

There is no pre-approved queue for vacancies or automatic succession in the Libs.
Everyone starts from scratch each time a vacancy appears and has to put their case to the membership's delegates who will vote.
It's called democratic process..

One man's "seamless" is another man's oligarchy.
In fact, nothing is more seamless than the passing of succession in a dictatorship..

Anne will get the vote. She is very highly respected within the party and has had a significant role in Lib campaigning here in SA. She will seamlessly get the vote of the members ;)

Here is what is actually happening.
The delegates, directly elected by the membership in each electorate, become the State Council for the year, and they will vote to select the nominee.
A strong field of candidates has nominated for Liberal Party pre-selection for the Senate casual vacancy caused by the resignation of Senator Mary Jo Fisher.
Six nominations were received by the close of nominations at midday today: Bev Barber, Gary Burgess, Greg Mayfield, Kate Raggatt, Anne Ruston and Marijka Ryan.
Due to her candidacy the State Director of the Liberal Party, Bev Barber, has stepped aside from that role to avoid any conflict of interest. An interim Director will be appointed shortly...

...The Party’s State Council will meet on Friday 27 July 2012 to select the proposed appointee to the vacancy, with a view to ensuring that both Houses of State Parliament sit as soon as practicable to endorse the appointment before Federal Parliament resumes for its Spring Sittings.

In that context I was saying what I had thought at the time, and expressing a purely personal conjecture that was still a valid possibility.
I did not say it was fact.

In this context I was talking about the facts about a specific disease, I happen to be qualified to be an expert witness in relation to, and how the law may choose to deal with it.
This are two totally different contexts - you can't realistically use one to denigrate the other.

OPPOSITION Leader Tony Abbott has refused to enter the factional brawl engulfing the state Liberal Party as it selects a replacement for former Senator Mary Jo Fisher.

But he has thrown his support behind state Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond who has been drawn into the battle because of her support for one of the candidates - former party state director Bev Barber.

It has emerged Ms Redmond signed Ms Barber's application for the Senate vacancy.

That comes despite her claim on Monday to have learnt about the nomination via SMS.

Senior Liberal sources have told AdelaideNow the move has placed Ms Redmond at the centre of a bitter factional battle and threatens to create enemies in her own party room.

The frontrunner for the spot is Christopher Pyne-backed moderate Kate Ruston.

Her main rival is Cory Bernardi-backed conservative Kate Raggatt.

Ms Barber has backing from elements in the conservative faction.

Senior Liberals say Ms Redmond is now making enemies on both sides of the party.

"She has voluntarily and foolishly walked into a factional fight," one said
