Personally I think the current structure is poor. ... but I like the idea of the BEST state league clubs from around the country playing each other in an environment that showcases the quality of state league football.

The idea of a national cup has merit problems are;

* Foxtel want it as content so its played at empty stadiums very early in the morning
* The northern states cant compete
* Money: there needs to financial incentives to play, i.e. gate money, bar money at home games etc.
* Value for sponsors

These are big hurdles to overcome - especially the Foxtel element as they provide the cash they are hardly going to set up for a telecast at a suburban ground in direct competition to an AFL match.

Could the tournament be held as a carnival during the AFL bye weeks?? - might get more bums on seats.

Given my club was invited and declined I reckon it's fair that Norwood supporters can share their opinion.

Over and over and over again. :D

I still like the idea of the Foxtel Cup. I think having just the 8 teams will make it more workable and there will be less uncompetitive matches. If they could schedule the majority of it in the pre-season (say the first round of 4 games over 4 weeks before the real season kicks off) then all clubs know they will only have to give up 2 byes max if they make it through to the GF. Also means the SANFL fixture won't be comprimised at all. Add some more serious coin as prize money which it sounds like they will do and then hopefully the SANFL Grand Finalists will participate and the competition will begin to gain some recognition.

Agree Aerie. Happy for the Eagles to be involved if our admin and playing group are jointly in agreeance.

Perhaps the first four KO games could be played on the weekend between the NAB GF and Round 1, greater exposure, no other footy on Foxtel etc, but the down-side from Foxtel's POV being it would leave only 3 games through the year. Alternatively it may increase the exposure of these three games.
SANFL clubs may take it more seriously as their first Foxtel game could double as their serious hit-out before the season instead of another trial game, and then only have two games throughout the year maximum, which would leave plenty of space for them to have two other byes.

So now the crazy allocation of byes is a problem, because it affects an AFL reserves club :roll:

Sounds like the VFL clubs are looking to revert back to stand alone clubs - perhaps their current model is failing?

AFL Victoria boss Grant Williams recently established a working party, which could see the VFL competition radically overhauled in the coming years with clubs pushing for stand-alone second tier teams and frustrated by the lack of cohesion between the alignments

Most fans of former VFA clubs hate the set up in victoria.... and would rather see their clubs continue at a lower level than be AFL reserve teams. After the Coburg issue I expect a big shake up of the VFL in the next few years

From the article:
"Carlton was forced to promote Robbie Warnock immediately back into the senior team in a bid to get him a game and some match fitness"

Wonder whether we see an article from Rucci saying how well our system works with our clubs willing to co-operate with each other and to give AFL players a run if needed.

pfft Rucci.... the one who claimed that SANFL clubs used SAAFL clubs as feeder teams. SANFL reserves was in operation before the SAAFL (as the SAFA but we just dont have the records for all premiers) and NEVER would have let a SAFL player in. Relations between the two comps has only settled in recent years.

It should be a pre-season tourney, run parallel to the NAB Cup. With the number of teams it would have to be three rounds of guaranteed games, with the top four going into the two-week finals. If necessary, have the GF at wherever the NAB Cup final is as a curtain raiser.

That way, pre-season trial matches would become unnecessary for some clubs as they would already be up against some quality opposition. Traditional venues would be ideal during the first four weeks. I mean really, how much equipment does Foxtel need to bring? The ABC do it with less resources than them, I'm sure.

I think people keep forgetting that the only reason this competition exsists is to fill a t.v gap for the Fox Sports Channel.
