From what was a very frustrating and poor standard game for 3 and a half quarters came one of the most memorable finishes, especially from an Eagles point of view. 15 points down and not looking likely to kick a goal, let alone the required 3 to get in front, at the 18 minute mark of the last quarter, somehow they did it. Then Slattery from Port kicked the goal of the day, 40m out on the run from near the boundary, to kick what was surely the winning goal at the 24 minute mark.
The ball went forward for Port until a McKenzie mark and the Eagles worked the ball forward, zig-zagging across the ground until Rowntree eventually won a free kick about 40m out in front of the main Grand Stand. The high tackle was there, and Port had quite a few free kicks in front of goal earlier in the game. Earlier in the quarter, Rowntree's attempt from the other pocket almost ended up closer to Port's goal than it did the goal he was aiming at so you'd still probably put your money on Port. But, he kicked the winning goal and the siren sounded moments after the centre re-bounce.
It was a great finish to an average game, but given the importance to both clubs and the way the last 10 minutes played out, it will go down as a classic. A real gutsy win to the Eagles who had Grocke and Giuffreda leave the field to take no further part in the 2nd quarter.
Luke Jarrad was outstanding for 4 quarters. Shirley was very good in defence, particularly in the first half. Grieger played an epic game in ruck. Hall and Goldsworthy were both effective also. Salopek got a lot of the ball for Port, he and Jarrad played loose on each other for much of the game. Beard was great across half back, seemingly marking the majority of the Eagles attempted entries forward.
