and you got gifted goals in the second half. The game is the last thing I want to think about right now, I'll come back when I've calmed down a bit

From what was a very frustrating and poor standard game for 3 and a half quarters came one of the most memorable finishes, especially from an Eagles point of view. 15 points down and not looking likely to kick a goal, let alone the required 3 to get in front, at the 18 minute mark of the last quarter, somehow they did it. Then Slattery from Port kicked the goal of the day, 40m out on the run from near the boundary, to kick what was surely the winning goal at the 24 minute mark.

The ball went forward for Port until a McKenzie mark and the Eagles worked the ball forward, zig-zagging across the ground until Rowntree eventually won a free kick about 40m out in front of the main Grand Stand. The high tackle was there, and Port had quite a few free kicks in front of goal earlier in the game. Earlier in the quarter, Rowntree's attempt from the other pocket almost ended up closer to Port's goal than it did the goal he was aiming at so you'd still probably put your money on Port. But, he kicked the winning goal and the siren sounded moments after the centre re-bounce.

It was a great finish to an average game, but given the importance to both clubs and the way the last 10 minutes played out, it will go down as a classic. A real gutsy win to the Eagles who had Grocke and Giuffreda leave the field to take no further part in the 2nd quarter.

Luke Jarrad was outstanding for 4 quarters. Shirley was very good in defence, particularly in the first half. Grieger played an epic game in ruck. Hall and Goldsworthy were both effective also. Salopek got a lot of the ball for Port, he and Jarrad played loose on each other for much of the game. Beard was great across half back, seemingly marking the majority of the Eagles attempted entries forward.

Ordinary game, but the best last 10 minutes of SANFL football played since last year's grand final. Eagles finishing at the end, under pressure, was superb. Big noise at Woodville. Gutsy win, gutsy club.

Thank you Aerie for your usual succinct match review. Obviously your father's English teaching skills have had an effect!
Forget the umpires, they were poor for both sides. Port were the better, more efficient side for most of the game, however, when the chips were down, the Eags drew deep from within and produced one of the best Eagles recoveries I have ever seen to pinch the game!
The effort was there all day but goodness, we butchered the ball for 3 quarters and 20 minutes. Raymond outstanding, Hall productive, Thompson courageous and consistent and Powell a great captain's game. To do that with only 19 men for 2 1/2 quarters was a testament to our belief and resilience even though we weren't playing well. Roll on next saturday!

Good work Eag's!
Fantastic finish and a whopper day at the office to beat the Pies like that. Heartbreaking for them, hugely pleasing for us.

Crap skills from both teams all day that the cross wind didn't help. The last free kick wasn't there... the ump has paid to high from a position where he had no possible way of seeing if it was a free or not and guessed in favour of the home team.

Some Eagles supporters have no idea of friendly banter and are a disgrace to football in general!

Absolute f..k'n disgraceful effort by the maggots today, if any games result was decided by terrible umpiring decisions it was todays. Those maggots ought to be sacked from umpiring for the rest if the season fair dinkum.
I'll give them one piece of advice, when its a 50/50 decision let the game flow instead of blowing your f..k'n whistle, the games not all about you wankers so stop bringing attention to yourselves for the wrong reasons.
When a player ducks his head into a tackle its a simple " holding the ball " not a free kick.

Some glaring stats for you to think about NM.
Disposals: Eagles 321, Port 289
Tackles: Eagles: 23, Port 17
Clearances: Eagles 38, Port 28
Inside 50's: Eagles 42, Port 37

You're scum got their fair share of dodgy frees in front of goals. At least 2 or 3 resulted in goals. The maggies can hardly blame the umpiring for the loss. If you think different, obviously you need to follow a different game.
