Rivalries between the SAAFL clubs - Who are they in 2012-13?

Postby Yardy Lard » Wed Dec 12, 2012 11:30 pm

Just what are the big rivalries in SAAFL football today? - What are the rivalries that have stood the test of time over many years?

Many rivalries are geographical, but not always.

As a player the rivalries in the late 70's, all of the 80's and much of the 90's were:
Riverside v Semaphore Central/Port District (which had been on-going since before the Second World War) and is still strong there today with Port District and Portland.
Probably no stronger rivalry in SAAFL football, other than the college teams. Certainly between the suburban clubs. A healthy rivalry, as well.
Riverside v Broadview (both powerhouse A1 clubs of the 70's, 80's, early 90's, and Broadview are still today) and of course but never forgotten were the games against Kilburn, which were unbelievably tough. Neither side gave an inch or asked one. Players would belt the shit out of each other all day and then have a beer afterwards and have a great laugh about it. You would look forward to the re-match, where you might earn the right to get one in on the guy who got you earlier in the season, before he got you again. Gladiator type matches and not seen today. Very enjoyable and absolute respect for everyone on the other side, no matter how hard they had hit you earlier that day.
Enormous respect was shown playing those 3 clubs especially, and there still is respect for all the clubs mentioned. You used to go hard at it on and off the field and still everyone says g'dday, even today. Great memories.

Playing the Greeks was always fun. In a different way however and resulted in having to take the boxing gloves to nearly all games. Bit of fun. Tribunal would be sitting for weeks these days after playing the Greeks. Would have been a week long effort in hearing all the cases circa 2012, and all the crap charges and ridiculous reports they make. Stupidity gone wrong, when just a bit of fun and nobody really got hurt. Today it is all about the image set and not wanting to get bad publicity and also keeping sponsors happy, and not wanting to lose funding. The knee jerk reaction last year, was based largely around those thoughts.

In a strange way Riverside and University had a strong bond as well, which was brought about by the great Fred Bloch. Fred was always a guest and a speaker at functions at Riverside in the 80's. Not many would realise the bond between these two clubs, as both clubs are very different in their thoughts and socio economic backgrounds. Soured at the moment, and lack of any respect for Uni, but the memories from those days are still there.

What are the rivalries now, where teams just want to play each other and look forward to the contest. The days of the boxing gloves and the all-ins have gone, but you can still have rivalry, without the off the ball entertainment.

Clubs like Modbury v Tea Tree Gully spring to mind, and I am thinking that is largely geographical. What are the real long term rivalries in the SAAFL, that have gone on for 20+ years and not just half a dozen years.

Agree Yardy
Saw a couple of Kilburn Broadview games in the 80s
Wow tough and hard
Saw a couple go toe toe also
Riverside and Kilburn was always a great day out to watch these 2 go at it also
Names, well guess better not name them on here, but if you was involved you know the ones probably as well as i do

Salisbury North and Elizabeth used to have a ripper rivalry. Always a blue there, whether in SAFA or CDFA/NMFL.
Then there's the Eagles and Eastern Park and Smithfield.
Lots of love there.

The suburban rivalries aren't quite as intense as they used to be, due to relegation/promotion.

Interestingly, Elizabeth will play Trinity OS this season and there will be some sort of rivalry there, no doubt.

All the CDFA/NMFL Clubs would see each other as their collective rivals as they generally played against each other 2 or 3 times a year for around 30 years

As long as there are old timers around the Club who remember them then they will get passed onto the current group

I know there were a few old old timers at this years Div 5 Grand Final who were pretty happy to see the tables turned from 1983 ;)

Modbury and TTG have had a fierce rivalry that's been ongoing for about 100 years, that's a few more than 20+

Greenacres and Golden Grove - a rivalry built from plenty of nailbiter finals over the years and a ripper ANZAC day clash each season.

PAOC v SPOC - A rivalry that stems from school intercols that have been going on forever and a day...

I've already mentioned PNU v Athelstone

I'd call HV and BL a "Friendly" rivalry - however others may not agree ;)
Don't play games with a girl who can play 'em better...

Kenilworth would be against CLG and possibly glenunga, but zedman or LK can correct me on that.

Maybe only a very new one - but Glenunga v Fitzroy would be a great rivalry of 2012-2013.

Wouldn't say GG has that big a rivalry with Salisbury West. In the early 2000's we had a big rivalry with Ingle Farm & Salisbury. Still remember a game out at Salisbury in 2000 where the umpire threatened to call the game off in the first quarter due to a few all in brawls.

Not correct
We played in A1 in the '80s and enjoyed a great rivalry with Rivvies.
Hardest match of the year but you'd drive back up Port Road at 11pm pi$$ed as a parrot
We didn't hate them - we just knew it was going to be a very hard match
I enjoy playing Portland to catch up with the old Rivvies blokes
Portland aren't Rivvies - major differences between the two clubs

I played in that game, my second A grade game, spot fires everywhere. Always good to beat Golden Grove, Salisbury West and Para Hills.

Its good to see other clubs recognizing the rivalry that GG and Greenacres have developed recently! ANZAC day will be a belter again!

The only other club i like beating up on more than Greenacres would be Hectorville

A lot of the lads playing a-grade in both sides were involved in some underage GF's a few years back. A nail biter Prelim final back when we were both D6 and a few ugly incidents last year have ensured the distaste has carried into the senior grades

Other than that: Hope Valley is always a good one due to the geographic proximity. No bitterness in that one though

I'm really looking forward to this year. Can see a decent reason emotional inspiration for most of our opponents this year. Nothing like settling old scores!

Smithfield vs Angle Vale last season was huge, Angle Vale may aswell of had their after match presentation in the Smithfield clubrooms, the place was packed for ages.
Having about 30 ex-Smithfield players sort of does that. It was good healthy rivalry out on the field.

Plymptons would be Unley and Rosewater being our main ones i reckon in the SAAFL... But the unley one not so much anymore. But i reckon the rosewater one will linger for a while... Plus Kenilworth, it's always good fun knocking them off.. Besides that we have a healthy rivalry with hope valley ;) ...

:goodman: ;)

Anyways GW, what comments were made?

Rivalries for HV:

There is certainly no love lost when we play Eastern Park (that extends back to the early 2000's) but we dont have to worry about that in the senior grades.

There is a healthy rivalry developing between us and Brahma now, certainly after last season. No spitefulness, just respect between both clubs whom often produce good quality contests (apart from the finals series last year :( )

As BB mentioned, we also resume hostilities against Golden Grove, similar to the lodge, we often have some great games against the kookas and i for one, cant wait to play against them again.
