Biggsy wrote:I'll chime in with an outsiders view then of the performances of the lads my the scorebook without being there

S. Holland (c) - Natural leader, spear headed the attack and perhaps bowled without much luck
J.Smith (vc) - Quality bat that made several starts and recovered SA a couple times after being 1 for not many, lacked that big score that he is more than capable of!!
A.MacDonald (vc) - The mascot of the team, class bat, served well!!
T.Hodson - The other half of the recovery from SA being 1 for 0, harsh assessment that he didn't make enough runs, batted consistently throughout the week and perhaps unlucky to miss out on All Australian selection!
J.McLeod - Good signs for a young lad, will only benefit from the experience
J. Borgas - Class act, consistent all week, say no more!!
M.Spry - Probably didn't have the impact he would have hoped but certainly wasn't disgraced, another learning curve for him
A.Balding - Fair surprise he didn't claim more poles, solid bowler but not much to show stats wise, perhaps another luckless bowler
P.Atkins - Another surprise to play such a pivotal role with bowl, tidy and consistent all week, dangerous bat aswell when firing so surprised he didn't get a few more runs
A.Harris - Quality kid, no big impact runs wise but another to benefit from the learning experience.
M.Trainos -May not have had a huge impact stats wise but will benefit from the experience
M.Mestroni - Few good digs down the order but struggled opening
A.Gully - Always a decent bowler

Feel free to rip me a new one but I wasn't there so outsiders view!!

Not bad from an outsider's perspective Biggsy and on the money with some of your assessments. To elaborate a bit further from within the inner sanctum ;

S. Holland (c) - Lead the side well and with great passion. Improving each outing as a skipper. Maybe lacked a bit of his usual consistency with the ball.
J.Smith (vc) - Struggled by his own admission, but Smithy's 'struggling' is better than some ppl's best. Looked solid for most of the week without a big score.
A.MacDonald (vc) - Class act. I hope the young lads learnt a lot about how he goes about batting on turf. Probably 1x 40+ away from a baggy green.
T.Hodson - Consistent all week and was odds on for an opening spot in the All-Aust until Day 5 where 2 opposition openers hit up tons and he registered a blob. That happens when you're an opener. Looked untroubled all week until he got out unexpectedly. Would agree that he failed to fully cash in on some solid starts.
J.McLeod - Surprised most with his form with the ball the first 2 days. Struggled to hit consistently good spots after that. Massive learning experience for a 19yo and will figure prominently in future Carnivals, both with bat & ball. Didn't get any real chances to build an innings with the bat & didn't bat higher than 8-9 all week.
J. Borgas - Stepped up to the next level & had a big impact. Great in the field as well. Richly deserved baggy green.
M.Spry - Struggled to hit good areas consistently with the new ball when given the chance, and overall. Bowled 2 great latter over spells under pressure. Good signs. Definitely would benefit from hitting the gym in the off-season & beyond.
A.Balding - Unluckiest bowler at the Carnival. Had numerous dropped catches that cost the team as well as the individual. Rested on Day 3, and on Day 5 after injuring his elbow towards the end of Day 4. Great competitor, great bloke.
P.Atkins - Our most consistent performer with the ball. Bowled some great spells and created chances at the other end, as well as for himself. Didn't get a chance to bat any higher than 7-8 and came in usually looking to push the scoring along in the latter overs. As with McLeod & Traianos, the form of our top 6 across the 5 days made it difficult for them to get any quality time at the crease. Hit some big balls on Day 4 to push our score to a defendable total.
A.Harris - Showed good technique and grit when given the chance to open on Day 3 & 4, putting on a 83 (?) run opening stand with Hodson on Day 3. Struggled a bit with the gloves, particularly towards the end of the week, mainly concentration IMO and also due to copping a few new rocks in the knee that missed the pad on Day 3. Learnt how hard it is for a keeper across 5 consecutive days. Lots of Carnivals ahead of him if he wants.
M.Traianos - Did well from limited opportunities. In his best chance to bat (at #6) for a period of time, he made a decent 20 on Day 4. Missed out (13th on Day 1). Fielded well & good voice. Top lad, will benefit greatly from the experience. Lots of Carnivals to be had in future.
M.Mestroni - Came into his own when slotted in at #7 and allowed to play his natural free-flowing game. Solid in the field in a number of positions and a good cricket head on his shoulders. Still only 27yo. Expect bigger & better things from Macca next Carnival after now experiencing his first tournament.
A.Gully - Struggled after Day 1 with hitting consistent areas. Lost confidence and got down on himself after Day 3. Rested on Day 4. Disappointing Carnival from his usually high standards but I back him to bounce back and lead the attack again in 2014.

Before the Carnival I spoke to the lads about the simple fact that eliminating errors from your game allows you to compete at a higher level and make an impact. At the end of the Carnival, those words still ring true. Our batting had to rank #1 across all teams for the 5 days but a lack of consistency with the ball and a failure to bowl well in partnerships, along with far too many dropped catches hurt us badly. You will struggle to win games when you execute 2 of the 3 facets of the game poorly, regardless of how many runs you put on the board. We need to improve in those 2 areas to seriously challenge for the title in 2014.

The pleasing aspect overall is the attitude of the lads and the culture we have created at the rep level, with far greater interest in rep matches and a strong nucleus of cricketers capable of impacting the next level and beyond. All players and their Clubs can be well proud of the players that represented us this year. I think it augers well for the future.

Any carnival summary from you carey?

Summary from me mmm well i dont know where to start to be honest. As has been said regarding the quality of the side i was of the opinion that we were a huge chance to win it therfore the 1-4 just staggers me. I wouldn't change our side at all even with hind sight at the start of the carnival i set out team goals to hit 200-220 a game and we basically did. I believe a major issue was dropping the 15 or so catches we did and just missing run outs. 1 run out can change the whole outcome of a game.

They say its a game of millimeters i couldn't agree more if we just had a couple of things go our way who knows. We were in a position to win every game at some stage over the week but just missed important moments in games.

We hit in excess of 1000 runs over the 5 days i highly doubt that has been done for a long period of time. Every game there was at least one most two really good parnterships with the bat at which stage we may of needed to get on with the innings a bit but we had blokes coming in that were opening bats for there club and its against there nature to get on with it from the word go. Again with this being said you dont pick blokes for this level of cricket because they can slap across the line tho

I thought our bowling as a whole just didn't adapt to the turf lengths needed to create the pressure needed to make the batsmen make the mistake and we would release pressure by bowling 1 or 2 bad balls an over and at this level that was the differance.

In summary it really was a case of so close yet so so far but as mentioned we can only hope we as a group learn from it take something out of the turf experience and better ourselfs as cricketers.

Holland- Loves leading the side has a true passion for doing it treats it as a huge honor and hopes he has 1 more left in him, took 6 wickets from few overs @ an ave. of about 18 with the bat only faced 8 balls for the carnival.

Smith-Got a start every game only once going on to make a 50 by his standards sub par but saying that to bat 3 and come out and play with the ease he did at times was very good. Also bowled some very handy off-spin. Is still an angry man......

McDonald- Great effort by the old man just missed AA selection showed the young lads the art of valuing your wicket early on then cashing in late can not speak highly enough of Ash over the last week although he is a terrible dancer!

Hoddo-Great effort opening the batting all week for the first 4 days it didn't look like Dale Styn would get him out probably got himself out a couple of times and was unlucky with the duck on day 5. He will get an AA cap mark my words.

McLeod- Great first 2 days i thought wow this kid is going to set this carniavl on fire but then maybe just thought it was going to happen? I guess that is youth will be much better for this experiance. Took a great 5 fa. Can spit the dummy ;)

Borgas- Fantastic really stood up in the middle order fantastic in the field a real pleasure to have in the side. Any 100 is great but a carnival 100 is something special. But sleeps way to much ;) Thank god he can play cricket as his singing is nothing short of shocking!! REM

Spry
- [/b]Limited oppurtunitys bowled the last 6 overs from one end against NSW to only go for 16 off them also bowled a good spell day 4 but just lacked consistency for the 6 balls to create pressure. Loves way to many sh!t cricketers

Balding
- Only really one innings with the bat to speak of with 1 great big one that went way back! bowled well with no luck at all about 5 or 6 dropped catches just off Baldo missed the last 2 games with injury. Wishes he came away for this level of cricket years ago

Atkins- Great week had by Pete probably struggled a bit with the bat having that hard wicket mentality although had 1 great little innings slapping the AA spinner all over the place but with the ball he was my go to man just kept the ball in good ares bowled about 60 overs over the 5 days and more than deserves his AA cap. Terrible farter! ;)

Harris- Did'nt get a great go with the bat as our top order did the job got a chance to open days 3 and 4 hit a good 20 odd and did a job with Hoddo the next day. With the gloves was good early but the 5 days got to the young lad i think although did get a couple of knocks early on in the week on the knee but could be the carnival keeper for the next 10 years has a great game to work with. Loves dumb people can you spell PLANT? yep flower!

Trainos- Well were do i start lol The male Paris Hilton spends that much time on his hair and is dumb as dog sh!t! nah just kidding his a good lad didn't really get a chance till he was run out then backed that up the next day with a 20 odd good fielder great voice took a great catch and has many carnivals ahead of him.

Mistroni- Opened the batting days 1 and 2 but IMO put far to much pressure on himself i say this as when he went down to 7 batting with freedom he looked a lot better a very good catcher in the field and will be a lot better for the experiance.

Gully- We all know Gully is a far better bowler than this carnival suggests with just the 2 wickets i think with Gully he just gets a bit down on himself he'll be around the mark for many years to come just has to hang in there and let his game develope.

I'd also like to take this oppurtunity to thank Goat Hearder, Tige and O/B for there efforts and support over the last week I'm sure you blokes who do that crap Facebook seen how Tige keeps the book together a fantasic effort!

And as for OB well f@#k me where we would be without you mate i have no idea! People on here would have no idea you drove over in your own car with all our gear and drove back new years eve for nothing but a thank you this on top of all the liitle things that go unoticed well OB to me they are not unoticed and i thank you very much.

Finnally to the coach Hearder well as i am sure many dont know on here Hearder has called it a day as Ass. Coach and what a service he has giving! it takes up alot of time and effort to be in these positions there also unpaid possies and Hearder has giving up a hell of a lot to hold this job for the length of time he has.

I personally have been involved with Wino for 7 years now and he has been nothing short of outstanding for my game and me as a person he shows great passion for the side and evry bloke in it so i would once again like to thank him very much.

That is surly an Australia A side? It's terrible surly even some one of your little knowledge of the game and love affair with B grade cricketers can see that? I could name a 1 day side off the top of my head at domestic level that would smash that side and what makes it even funnier if you bums lose this series you go to about 5th or 6th in the world rankings!
