It has been a journey since I last wrote to you after the Preliminary Final victory and a lot has happened since this time. It would be fair to say that we have had our challenges but the thing that I need to express is that this group is resilient and determined to go the distance. I tested this in late January with a Grand Final review of the areas that went so horribly wrong. Subtle changes to training methods, game style and to our list have all been embraced. Players and staff can go either way after humiliation (get busy living or get busy dying). I am so proud of the standards of the group.
We have 3 new recruits to the Club in 2013. Two former AFL players and a local boy from Blackwood by the name of Phil Hopton. Phil played at Sturt as a junior and recently in the seniors at Blackwood. He is a developing mobile player. The other two are lovable ratbags. Brad Mangan and Travis Tuck were team-mates at Werribee and have formed a friendship that may cause our opposition some physical stress. Both are strong bodied players with great foot skills and clearance expertise. Both are versatile in height and athleticism and have enrolled in the same course at TAFE. Travis Tuck and Brad Mangan have been great additions to our Club.
I am equally excited about the return of Ryan Anderson to our group after a year of country football. He is in great shape and ready to be the game breaker that he was developing to be.
No serious injuries to report, no games have been won or lost.
I am in the privileged position as Head Coach of our Club and I must lead our football teams to become better. Ryan Ferguson will again be Captain supported by two Vice Captains - Chris Schmidt and Adam Hartlett. Daniel Caire and Aaron Fielke round out the leadership group. This is a group worth following.
Our junior football teams continue to go from strength to strength under the management of Andrew Marks (who continues to brag about being the only premiership coach last year with our women’s team been victors) and through coaching by Jarrod Meares and Damien Salevic. Seven boys will play in the state U18 trial on the weekend. U17 boys Jesse Watchman and Sam Durdin, both AIS scholarship recipients, may also play. I believe we also have 4 women preparing for the nationals in Queensland.
I want you all to be aware of the charitable side of our players. Last week Taite Silverlock clipped all his hair of for THE WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE. Please visit our website for details and support Taite by making a donation for this great cause. Secondly, on the 23rd of February the boys will be unleashed as a mobile renovating team. Our target is the old Richmond Baptist Church and Community Centre on Richmond Road. Local businesses have already been very generous in their support but we need more help. Get involved and make a difference. Please visit our website for details and I hope to see you there helping.
Finally, I wish our new president Richard Sykes well and look forward to supporting him with strong on-field results.
Go Bloods! Sorry again that I have taken so long to write. Let us have a great year on and off the field.
Regards,
Andrew Collins
