To what extent do the rule changes in the AFL affect us?

I noticed the umpires on the weekend implementing the new ruck rule where you couldn't make contact before the throw in.

the umpires we had failed to pay the slide in rule free kick against i assume some dont go to umpire trainning still or just choose to ignore the new rules one or the other

also didnt bother with the throw in rule either let contact start from get go

This is a real downside to being affiliated with the AFL, they are hell bent on ruining Australian Rules Football which is fine if that's what they want to do but they shouldn't be ruining it for the rest of us.

I can't remember if there were any free kicks given due to this new rule in our trial against Golden Grove on Saturday but talking to our ruckman afterwoods about it and he said he was finding it hard to adjust too as like most ruckman he likes to have body on body contact with the opposition ruckman, having a bit of a wrestle with them and get into position early prior to the ball being thrown in. Guess it's like any new rule though and ruckmen and umpires alike will get used to it eventually.

i personally think the new rule will make it harder for the weaker ruckmen

I just watched the video on the AFL site, and its **** ridiculous! Especially Josh Caddys one. Im gonna be rubbed out for most of the year.

The natural instinct of a footballer is to go for the football - no matter where it is. This sliding in rule takes away the first thing a player is ever taught (to get the football)

Unfortunately this sliding rule, will mean the player who sweats off and stands there will be awarded a free kick if any part of the person going for the ball touches him below the knees.

Can see a valid point, if players dive in with their feet such as soccer players, as this would and will cause injury, but a player going in with his body or head should not be penalised for having the courage to go in and get the ball. Makes little sense.

The non-engaging, before a ruck contest really is a nothing rule. As soon as the ball is released by the umpires then the ruckmen then engage and lock arms. It only means you cant engage before an umpire lets the ball go. Ample time and opportunity to engage after either the central umpire or boundary umpire releases the ball. Cant quite work out why this rule is in, as it does nothing to stop the holding on at a clearance or stoppage IMO other than in the initial period.

The funny thing is, the first example they showed of how they want you to attack the footy, someone nearly gets their head taking off with an elbow.
