New NEMJFA Ruling

Due to the increasing number of incidents involving parents/spectators coming onto ovals and being involved in verbal and physical confrontations with players and officials the following will now be put into place.

As of this weekend NO parents/spectators will be allowed to enter the oval at anytime PRIOR / DURING / AFTER THE GAME from Under 11 to Under 16's

Ground Marshals shall be instructed :
Once the Game has finished they both enter the oval and advise anyone trying to enter the oval that they must leave immediately.

Any Breaches the following penalties apply:

$500 fine for the first offence

2nd Offence will result in the Team being suspended from playing for 1 week and the opposition will be awarded a forfeit win for the game.

The Association and Clubs both have a duty of care to the players and officials to provide a safe environment for the game to be played in. Clubs please make sure all your teams are informed ie Newsletter handed out this week to all parents/spectators as No Excuses for breaches will be accepted.

I for one am in favour of the ruling, not so much for the interaction between players & opposition supporters but for the coaches who have 3 minute breaks & a 6 min half time break to address the players. After the kids have wandered in & had a drink there's bugger all time left for the coaches to interact with them.
Our club have bought in this policy this year for the above reasons, to many times a (usually) Father takes the lad aside & gives his own instructions, even white anting the coach on occasions. Thankfully the ones that have abused the coaches wishes have gone elsewhere either not invited back or left at the start of the season when the rule was introduced.


To NEMJFA clubs.

There has been considerable discussion, both positive and negative, regarding the direction from the NEMJFA Executive of no spectators at all on the oval, either before, during or after the game.

The reasons why this has been implemented are:
1. The poor behaviour, language of a minority of spectators that are watching our games.
2. Two very serious incidents that occurred during the last round of matches, involving player / spectator interaction.
3. The NEMJFA has a "duty of care" to all 4,500 players that play our great game to be able to play without interference from persons not involved with the game.
4. It is unacceptable for any person to interfere with the enjoyment of sport for our players.
5. Since round 1 of the season, umpires reports have indicated poor crowd interaction with our games.
6. Despite repeated warnings, the poor behaviour has continued and you could argue escalated.

It is unfortunate that this rule has been implemented because of a small minority of spectators, however we cannot be present at all 102 games each weekend. We will be targetting teams / clubs identified as continual offenders where possible. We continue to seek your assistance in continuing to prevent / stamp out these problems.

You might not be aware that we have at least two NEMJFA clubs that have self managed by applying this rule to their club for this season. We will not be preventing kids having a kick of the football well away from the huddles, this is part of our culture.

Looks like there's been a bit of strife lately, one report was apparently of a u13's player being headbutted by an opposition supporter after a game.

This week on the MWJFL web site, this was placed on the home page. The only incident I've seen this year was last week, one parent called out "what about in the back", hardly offensive or abusive. The reply from the umpire was somewhat bemusing, it was along the lines of "shut up you idiot or I'll have you removed"

Dear Coaches and Spectators,

It has come to the attention of the League, that an unacceptable amount of abuse and criticism is being directed at our Umpires this season.

We ask all coaches and spectators to show some restraint before yelling abuse at our Umpires. We acknowledge that they have a difficult job to do, and this is only exacerbated when everyone is yelling at them and telling them what to do. The Umpires do an excellent job, in difficult circumstances, some of the complaints we have received highlight just one incorrect decision during the whole game, if the Umpire has only made one mistake during 60-80 minutes of football we would suggest he has had a good game.

Professional Umpires in the AFL aren't perfect, so what chance do we have at Junior level of achieving this expectation?

It is hard enough to retain Umpires as it is, by abusing them we risk losing them. Remember without Umpires your kids won't be able to play football.
