If you listen to any radio show from Melbourne, you'll realise no team does. The fitness guru's don't allow it because of fatiguing certain parts of the players bodies. Brian Taylor apparently quit his goalkicking coaching role with the Western Bulldogs a few years ago when he realised they dedicated zero time to the skill at practice.

Lloyd, Taylor, Dunstall have all said at various times during radio segments that they used to spend an extra night out at training just kicking 100-150 balls. THe players now don't have that luxury of having an extra day to practice, therefore the skill is lost.

It's a farce and needs to change. And unbelievably the first team to do it at training and 'perfect' it, it will repay them many times over thereby REVOLUTIONISING the game!

gadg1976 i find that absolutely bizzare m8 as correct me if im wrong but dont you win games by trying to kick more goals than your opposition??? now i understand you can kick a point and win a game but the main aim of the game is scoring goals when you have a shot....

After Essendon's disaster infront of the sticks last week Hirdy gave them an hour of extra goal kicking practice on Thursday night. David Zaharakis tore his quad taking set shots and will miss 6 weeks. Ive heard some media getting stuck into Hirdy about it

A football team neglecting to practice goalkicking is like a professional golfer neglecting to practice his or her putting.

Those blokes also mentioned that a contributing factor could also be the pace of the game. They estimate the heart rate of a player taking a set shot could be anywhere up to 50 BPM higher than when they played.

So any practise that they do should be simulated match conditions by sprinting for the ball then taking the shot.

This is what I do after training so I'm pretty puffed when kicking.
If you don't like it, change it. If you don't want to change it, it can't be that bad!

well my team still can't kick for goal. The opposition wander down the other end and kick and easy goal and almost put this one away.

last two weeks, 23.39. I dare say 20 of those should've been goals (set shots or otherwise). It makes a difference.

so you could easily say that bad kicking for goal cost the Hawks. Buddy kicked 3.4 and one out on the full. That might've been the difference.

Was the difference... Was a amazingly stupid run up he has - will only ever kick 1 out of 3 with a poor technique like that...

I'm staring a list of teams that have burnt themselves with bad kicking, effectively losing close games because they can't kick set shots.

So, after seeing last night, I'm adding West Coast round 4 to the list that already includes Carlton who have made the list in the first three rounds;

Rd 1 Carlton v Richmond
Rd 2 Carlton v Collingwood
Rd 3 Carlton v Geelong
Rd 4 West Coast v Carlton

any other teams due for nomination?

Rd 5, I didn't see the West Coast game but I'm nominating both them and Collingwood as teams who shot themselves in the foot this week.

Rd 1 Carlton v Richmond
Rd 2 Carlton v Collingwood
Rd 3 Carlton v Geelong
Rd 4 West Coast v Carlton
Rd 5 West Coast v Port, North v Hawthorn and Collingwood v Essendon

Add the Roos to this weeks list, lost to Hawks by 3 points despite having 2 more scoring shots and some of their misses were laughable

cool, done!

I just read a story on the Age website and the article was about WCE's goalkicking which has culminated in 17.42 in the past two weeks. Shuey reckoned that they spent a heap of time on goalkicking. I wonder if set shot goalkicking was even discussed at any of these trainings.
