Like Rucci's suggestion better than any other I've heard. One issue I'd think for the AFL clubs would be when they make the finals but their reserves team doesn't. Wouldn't be ideal for them to have their excess players short on match fitness and form.

I don't want Port Maggies to go, I love the history, the floggings, the abuse, the good laughs with Harold, Wrighty & Donga. But most of all, I want the c***s to make a Grand Final against Us, so We can finally beat the bastards! ;) You can't lose that sort of stuff, just because of the greedy bloody AFL.

Every other club has to deal with that already. Doesnt seem to affect them

My solution to the PAFC future structure is relatively simple.

If the PAFC want to just focus on AFL premierships
and have the Magpies as some Power reserves team in the SANFL reserves comp
then make that choice.

If the PAFC want the be the only club in the AFL
- to have a zone to develop players to win a state league title
- in addition to AFL commitments
then go your hardest.
- if that means the Magpies and Power share a reserves side (surely a better
solution than no Magpies at all) great.
- if that means seperate Magpies & Power have seperate reserves sides in
the SANFL reserves comp then I think you are crazy but OK.

Just two things

- like the Crows there can be no AFL reserves team at SANFL league level even if it is the Power dressed in Magpies clothing.

- At the end of the day, free of the SANFL, its up to the PAFC to take responsibility for the structural decisions they make, so they need to be responsible for getting the model right and to fund it like any other AFL club.

So a better solution would be the power and crows have a reserve side in the sanfl reserves comp. The magpies keeping the league side with a ruling that doesn't allow a AFL listed player to play in SANFL league comp. Doing it this way would keep the magpies in the league comp and will make sure that port don't move players to the league side. Games can be easily structured. SANFL clubs play each other as it is and when they have a bye their reserves side plays against the crows as a curtain raiser. The only downside is when the crows play interstate, they could play the game before the power. It would mean the crows team would play at AO every week, but this would mean the SANFl clubs didn't have the extra cost of opening a stadium for a reserves match and be good for the sanfl teams to play on AO if they are playing finals there.

In addition to that the SANFL could provide so many subsides tickets to the SANFL clubs, so memebers can buy and go watch the game.

I cant see that being an option. Port always wanted to go into the AFL, its time for us to cut the strings like we should of done all those years ago.

Easier to scrap the magpies. Let the power reserves play in the sanfl reserves. Less complicated, and the power will have 2 less teams to pay costs for.

yeh but with sturt already struggling how are they going to afford to open up a stadium when it's strut reserves vs the crows/power.

One idea is that the U18's would move to be the curtain raiser to league games. The u18's and league would be 8 team comps. You could then have a 21 round fixture with 1 home, 1 away and 1 at a neutral ground ie football park.
The Reserves would become a 10 team comp and play stand alone games at the grounds not being used that weekend

Why would Sturt have to pay for it? I would make the afl clubs pay for it. They are the ones wanting to field a reserves team.

Such an insignificant detail, I wouldn't even think it is worth mentioning.

Or...

Tell them BOTH to rack off & leave our competition alone.
Go play in the NEAFL, VFL, or Whatever.

Could sell the AFC Licence to Tassie & PAFC Licence to NTFL - now there's a thought ;)

Yes the Crows and Port Power have to pay an annual fee to play in the reserves competition. They are utilising the SANFL clubs facilities and a fee is required to compensate the compromise that the reserves now become.

Unfortunately Port Adelaide now has to go, and will I miss going to my favourite away ground Alberton. It has been an absolute pleasure over the last dozen years or so, listening to the complaints of the Alberton faithful, thinking that's what we must have sounded like all those years ago.

One issue with the AFL reserves in SANFL reserves comp idea that I haven't really seen discussed yet is

- say a Crows player gets delisted but still has a strong desire to play in the AFL. Would they be tempted to become a "top up" player for the Crows Reserves rather than play for a SANFL League team? There would need to be a very low salary cap enforced for these top up players, if there wasn't then you could see the Crows offering these types of players more than they would get at SANFL clubs, as it would also be in their best interests to have top up players who already know their game plan etc.

- similarly, would there be players at other SANFL clubs who would prefer to play a Reserves game against the Crows on Adelaide Oval instead of a League game at Noarlunga, in the belief that this would enhance their prospects of getting drafted?

- and would the AFL-centric media give more coverage to the Reserves or the League competition?

So putting these things together I think there could be a risk of an identity crisis as to which is the stronger and more prestigious competition unless it is managed very carefully.
