Outer side always been good and but now better drainage on the western side after some council works in the last 12 months, plus a working bee of players in March to top dress some of the low spots which also helps with run off. Turf wicket sqaure will always create problems after a big downpour and our ground was struggling in our previous 2 home games but recovered quicker than it would have in previous years. The weekly timing of this winters rainfall has created more wet weather footy than the last couple of years. It seems most rain we have had, has fallen on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday and it appears this week will be no different.

DTH, about time the council did something about the drainage. My brother was the groundsman there from late 70's to mid - late 80's. He spent hours upon hours each winter sinking a couple of hundred 4 foot deep holes all around the oval with a posthole digger and filling them with gravel in an attempt to get some drainage happening.

How is the centre wicket in summer these days? I used to enjoy having a hit on that track, thought is was the best in ATCA back in those days.

My cricket allegiance is elsewhere but Brighton is still one of the best turf decks around. Often hosts Association Games and neutral finals. Ever since the croquet club was built in the north-west pocket, drainage had got worse and the oval suffered for the increased football usage and often was bumpy and patchy for the first part of the cricket season and a slow outfield all of the season. However the cricket club boys reported the best oval surface for years last summer and best value for shots for a long time. The fairly new drainage on the western side of the oval has some sort of pump mechanism that assists with clearing the water from the drainage pipes.

Phil Pippett has been sacked. A player said today that the coach wasn't happy after the win over Flaggies on Saturday. He told a "favourite son" of the club that he was no good and too old (early 30's i think). Also told players (who were kicking plenty of goals) that they were going forward too much ??? Can't work that one out .....thought coaches wanted players to kick goals !!

They've had a strange season Porties. 7 wins and 9 losses with a percenatge better than 60. Have done more damage to the struggling sides than what anyone has done but have struggled to impact the scoreboard in most of those 9 losses. So maybe the coach had a point and was frustrated that they could kick 50 goals across 2 games v Flaggies this year but kick less than 10 goals in 7 matches. He took them to a surprising 3rd last year and their B grade has been the most competitive they have been these last 2 years for quite some time.

All games that will shape the 8.
Anyone pick the 8 at the start of the year?

Not quite yet its not ------ if Cove knock Brighton over this week they're back in the battle with a huge chance
Interesting point about the Valley in Grand Finals ------ played in 8 over past 20 years, won the lot ------ pretty impressive that

Well given that we are a 'Dads Army', obviously we have no hope. Must be Reynella that are favourites now.

Correct, the footy gods seem to be favouring those that like the ball on the ground. Oh well, prefer that than dealing with another drought, especially given council plans to charge clubs for their water usage. Just another way the friendly voice of the citizens is assistiing to make life harder for sporting clubs.

OMG !!! Surely Happy Valley aren't going to be dragged into the real world that most other clubs exist in ! Just because Happy Valley are lucky enough to have a working bore they have had the luxury of cheap or free water when most other clubs have to allocate an enormous amount of their budget to pay $20,000 or more for water. I would suspect that maybe that huge financial advantage has helped the valleys somewhat on the field as well :) So maybe the friendly voice of the citizens may actually be assisting to make life fairer for all sporting clubs - rather than a few being unfairly advantaged. Maybe even a level playing field !

Wasn't referring to Happy Valley, was referring to clubs in general. Maybe you should ask Christies Beach how they feel about the prospect of it. And in relation to fairness, this isn't the AFL Dazza, we don't have equalisation policies, otherwise Flaggies might have won a senior premiership.

He does have a point AFC.
Some clubs like mine pay $30k water bills every year. If a club doesnt have to find that then they are ahead of the game already. HV would still be paying something though as even bore water isnt free. But good luck to you for having a bore....lucky bastards.

Given that the public can access these facilities when not in use, I don't think it's fair that any club pays to keep their ovals green and in good nick.
Heaps of people use the ovals as community facilities, walking dogs, playing with the kids etc. so I think it should be borne by council anyway.
Most of us pay enough in rates as it is and clubs in general are very good custodians of the facilities on behalf of the council.

Clubs should contribute but agree that they should not have to fund 100% of the cost

Would have thought that Marion was as well equipped as anyone to host finals.

Marion hosted finals for 3 or 4 years in a row from about 2003 to 2005 or 2006. Usually Week 2 of finals. We played at least 2 there. Rather than the SFL do the gate as for other finals, Marion would pay the SFL $4,000 (average gate back then for a minor final) and then run the gate themslves after getting council to put up temporary fencing all around the complex. I assume something similar this year. The place lacks atmosphere in the home and away but if the weather is OK there will be plenty out on the trotting track. Plus the upstairs has an even bigger outdoor viewing area these days so I can't see an issue with it.

Marion are effectively guaranteeing the gate, so it is their entire risk.
Not a bad surface, no other issues so why should the SFL not be "Serious"?

0 atmosphere - parking around oval a nightmare.

I know they had them there in the past and from attending a few reckon its the worst venue for finals - the same years they had em at Reynella - Happy Valley, I guess the only issue is the surface with these decks if it gets to wet.
