Paul Blandis and D.B. on 5rph thursday night

Postby - » Sat Jun 16, 2007 12:19 pm

Paul,

This may not seem a big deal to you or anyone else. The fact you stated the North V Glenelg game as having 3000 just after you had pumped up 3700 at Unley when in actual fact there was 4000 at the bay was extremely lax. You gentlemen like to say how you want to promote the SANFL which you do. However from time to time things like this creep in and it smells of a lack of research and care factor. The difference between 3000 and 4000 is huge. Its like the difference between 30000 and 40000 in the AFL. It is highly likely that the small amount of people listening are diehards and knew of your error anyway. However what if a handful of people were listening for the first time. You wasted an opportunity to brag about the fact there was 4000 at a game. An opportunity to sell the competition to those who like to think noone attends or cares.

Also please try and lessen the amount of "and ah's".

D.B.,

I thought you showed a real lack of research/knowledge when Laird picked you up on the fact that Centrals had a good record at Unley when you said they didn't. Lift your game.

To both of you,

I'm sure it's not easy on the air, I understand you do it for nothing. In the interests of promoting the competion try and show a bit more professionalism.

Well -, I have to agree with you on all points, particularly the statement heard 2,ooo times per match "and the player in ....passes to the player in....no thats thje player in xxxx or is it, any way whoever it is passes to the player in.....who is that player? DB"

I also believe they do it for nothing, in DB's case I would probably pay him not to go on!

Good post -. I appreciate their efforts but if you're gonna do a job you may as well do it properly and I believe the criticism is valid.

Community radio chaps
Voulenteer workers involved ?

HAVE YOU GUYS TRIED TO CALL A FOOTY GAME ?
I bet most of you look in the budget who a player
is at times and work it out 10 seconds later
Can you imagine if the 5RPH boys paused for 10 seconds.

And yes if they make mistakes big deal these are norMAL people
creating a coverage for pittance.

I reckon DB,PB,Smithy and the boys do a good job and I really
enjoy listening to these guys.

They do a better coverage of footy than triple J

In a strange twist I was introduced to smithy and blandis after the game at unley today through a good mate.

I told paul of my post within 10 minutes of meeting him and the conversation continued for another hour. While I stand by my comments he is a top bloke and hope to have another beer with him one day.

MAL, MAL, MAL c'mon now. You cant seriously think they do anything close to resembling a professional job. Guess what, when you know a week or so in advance what game you're covering, you are allowed to do a bit of homework and famliarise yourself with the players numbers etc.
And yes it is better than nothing but way short of what it could be.

To put a positive spin on a negative topic I heard the half time intereview with Merv Keane on RPH today and thought it was fantastic, if Merve wasn't pissed he's a natually very funny guy.
It was a great interview with lots of humour, thoroughly enjoyed it.

The main part of the RPH calls that I dont like is that it sounds more like an advert with footy tacked on.

i think they do a great job & remember at least you can understand what is coming out of the mouths of ds,db & the others that fill in from time to time including their mistakes but if you listened to poor old kg or rowie it is a lot worse, as at times during a broadcast it is clear as mud

i'd be happy to have a crack at it, would anybody else ?

I also think they are doing a great job. Now I'm used to their style I find their mistakes are all part of their charm and they do admit it when corrected. I really look forward to their commentary now...with the humour and banter they are much better than the 'holier than thou', over paid so called experts you hear in some other sports. OK so the constant mention of sponsors names can be annoying but it's a small price to pay. Afterall how else would those of us that can't physically get to a game feel part of the SANFL...no offence to those that post scores on here, you do a fantastic job but it's not the same as a commentary with the crowd in the background. Keep it up DB, PB, Smithy and co (not forgetting LifeFM too).

Yeah, I'd give it a go with appropriate time to prepare. I'd also need the commentator that I took over from to take some photos as good as mine!

It seriously isn't that hard at all to get 99% the players right if you make the effort to do some preparation. I know as I regularly call the stats for the opposition teams, and get very annoyed if I even get a single player wrong!

I realise that it is more difficult when you are trying to make the call interesting when doing it on radio (and not just saying Clayton kick, Waterhouse mark etc. :) ), but still, commentators should not be getting things wrong more than one or two times a game. I cringe whenever they continually confuse players who look nothing alike, and feel sorry for those people listening at home who are not getting an accurate description of the game.

Must admit, they annoy the f$%k out of me, but usually after I have made a post based on something they said, only to find out they got it completely wrong. During the game, when you only have their word for what is happening, you have to take it as red that they calling it correctly as you have nothing to compare against.

Like I have said before, they have been the source of some embarrassment, but on the other hand, they are all I have and I for one think they do ok. They have 9 teams to familiarise themselves with, with plenty of in's and out's and positional changes, and I think commentating on a game is more difficult than some give credit for. They have a split second to make a call and if the player is obscured by others, or they can't see his number, then mistakes are bound to happen. Like Mal (I think), says, how many of you refer back to the budget to confirm a player etc.

Give them a break. I don't see many others lining up to promote the SANFL with live coverage week in week out.

However, giving out scores during the Port v North game, "North something, something, alot", come on boys you can do better than that.
