Totally agree benny, I dont think a lawyer would be better than someone with the basics of economics and finance.
And you are right; it is a problem. At least our most recent "World's Greatest Treasurer" Swan got somewhere close to the mark.
But a street spiv when the States finances are in so much trouble?

I'd rate Peter Costello over Keating any day. Keating never really knew what was over the next horizon whereas Costello always had a good handle of what was going on. The signature of someone who reacts because he lacked the basic understanding, and another who was comfortable in the job.
Keating (and Hawke) did some massive transformations of the Australian economy, but they had opposed many of them in Howard's years as Treasurer, and then opposed Hewson on the GST which he had actually previously advocated. He was expedient and that is not the mark of a great man. Have a look at Labor now - they suck from the GST nipple and here in SA, they suck from the Roxby Downs nipple. Morally corrupt.

But, as time moves on, Keating is very active in rewriting history to leave a false legacy of his time in office. He will have the epitaph 'World's Greatest Treasurer" inscribed on his headstone. I'll bring my dogs to visit it

Yep. It was a bit forced watching Jay trying to rally the troops. At one stage he looked as if he was desperately hoping for a here here or some form of acknowledgement from his peers. I wasn't left convinced that there was alot of enthusiasm in that cabinet room.

Tommy K was the only Labor person who I saw/heard speak about that awful piece of electioneering that seemed convinced it wasn't a dog whistle. The rest seemed very mealy-mouthed about it. You'll have to give him credit for that.

Kout's response was the perfect example of the political thinking that two wrongs make a right. Schoolyard debate - "he did it first!"

It is a matter of political philosophy and orientation shaping perception, and which faction makes most noise.

From my viewpoint, PK started the collapse of all manufacturing industry in Australia be using free trade to artificially lower CPI and thus encourage the unions to keep to the "Accord" and thus keep the ALP in power longer. (Just like his use of the "L. A. W." tax cuts he defaulted on.)

He also introduced populist changes that backfired:
1. The ban on negative gearing led to a rental housing shortage and had to be reversed.
2. The ban on the tax deductible business lunch cost a lot of jobs in the restaurant and cafe trade.
3. Requiring a log book to back car deductibility resulted in people like me making bigger deductions thereafter.*

(* I went from 90% deductibility for one car to 100% of that car, plus 30% of a second, simply because I had to bother to do the paper work.)
