If we're thinking of the same song, that wasn't Tism. It was a funk type group from Brisbane (maybe).

But Tism did have some songs with a similar theme - Leaper will surely tell us that...

Is that the same mob who sang "im on the drug that killed River Phoenix"?

Tism sung that, yes.

I think "Australia don't become America" was actually sung by a Melbourne mob called Brown Hornet. Pretty sure that's right.
"I'm on the drug that killed River Phoenix" is actually called "He'll never be an old man river"....just to be pedantic

"He's gonna step on you again" was orginally done by John Kongos in the early 70's and is actually a protest song about Apartheid.
In the late 80's for some weird reason three australian acts did a cover of it all about the same time. The Chantoozies, The Party Boys and The Exploding White Mice.
No prizes for guessing which one of those three versions DOESN'T make me want to throw up.

The Happy Mondays also did a version of that song.
Trippy, trippy, trippy.

As for the Aussie versions, I unfortunately have all but one of them. The one that doesn't make Leaper throw up.

As for Australia Don't Become America, I'm pretty certain it wasn't Brown Hornet (Dylan what's his faces band). It wasn't that type of funk.

The band that sang Australia Don't Become America was Cranky.

Brown Hornet do a more traditional George Clinton type funk than Cranky, who were more early Chilli Peppers stylee.

Yeah I remember Mrs Wilbur Wild's mob having a crack at it around the same time, but never really listened to anything from TEWM ... Knew the Party Boys weren't the originals, but was young and enjoyed pretty much anything Swanny sung (yes, I even liked the CDFC song when he sung it lol).

Thank you! That's them. My confusion comes from seeing them both at The Espy in the mid-90's. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
