Round 23 last year v Carlton was a sellout IIRC.

Yeah good call, last ever game at aami they got 45k to the game.

Because I am a nerd I went and looked up how many times port have had a non showdown 40k+ crowd and it is surprisingly few.

R22 2013 vs Carlton 45127
Prelim final 2007 vs north melb -44953
R22 2005 vs Freo -41518
Prelim final 2004 vs st Kilda 46978
R10 2003 vs collingwood 43321
R22 2002 vs Bris 46439
R10 1997 vs Carlton 40116

Thats only 2 out of their 9 home finals that had over 40k in crowds too(excluding the adelaide final)

So that game against geelong marks their highest non showdown home crowd ever,

So they have only had 7 non showdown 40+ crowds EVER, 8 including geelong this year.

Now tell me adelaide oval doesn't have an effect!!!

They also have home games against hawthorn, essendon and Carlton to come this year. All will smash 40k the way port are playing.

(They also only got 32747 to their first ever hole game against essendon)

Instead of trying to compare apples to oranges with crowd attendance, how about find out crowd numbers against membership numbers?

No good sitting there pointing out that Port have struggled to get 40k+ to home games over their existence when last year was the first season they passed 40k members!

Port Adelaide membership numbers have seen an increase every year since 2009, that in itself is impressive and should be the focus of discussion, not that Port couldn't fill AAMI stadium every home game

Fair point, I just thought it was very interesting seeing how well port have been doing this season. (Just for comparison, since 1997 the crows have had more than 40k in a non showdown game 96 times ;). Couldn't resist the brag)

a good article, using last year's stats, showing the proportions of the different types of membership and the associated revenue.

shows that port have mostly full season tickets but still quite a proportion on reduced game memberships, if the proportion is the same this year.

good job PG. i think you could correlate those numbers pretty closely as the percentage of people on full memberships rather than reduced game or memberships that dont include games etc.

What these numbers tell me, is with the exception of the tougher few years, Port and Crows both have remained quite stable and people exaggerate too much.

Obviously Port had those tough few years, but take that out the equation and they were still quite consistent with their numbers.

An interesting read, shows really how misleading the membership numbers can be, when you look at a club like say Carlton who are listed as the 4th highest membership base, but large portion are reduced games, those with either H&A memberships or Home only have a higher % of membership revenue

Yes, good reading. Interesting that the non-Victorian based clubs ( certainly WA and SA based ) seem to have among the lowest reduced game memberships in the competition.

I think a lot of the Melbourne people might choose to only go to the marquee games.

Not so much for port, but certainly for the crows (and west coast) a lot of people buy a full season membership so they are guaranteed access to the marquee games that sell out. Sellouts don't often happen in Melbourne.

Also if I was a Richmond supporter for instance I might save my money and go see the big collingwood game twice, home and away, in lieu of a season ticket where I would have to go see gws

I think if port keep going well the same effect will happen too, that small number of reduced game memberships will upgrade for fear of missing out on the games they want
