If you followed the odds by Mal there was a stack of money to be made.
Nearly every winner was shorter than the bookmakers who bet on the afl.
what does 0-98 west coast mean ?
western bulldogs his best bet was a good punt
well done Mal

Lions shock win costs punters $2m
09 July 2007 Herald Sun
Michael Manley

THE shock Brisbane Lions win against West Coast proved a boon for sports bookmakers, with punters losing up to $2 million on the match.

Brisbane started at double figures and is believed to be the only team this decade to score at those odds.

Lasseters Sports' Gerard Daffy said with more than 40 sports bookmakers in Australia, it would be impossible to judge how much money was lost. But he estimated it to be in the millions.

Daffy said it was rare for punters to take the long odds-on quote, as many instead preferred to use the side in multiple bets.

The Eagles' price varied between $1.04 and $1.07.

Brisbane's starting price was between $10 and $11.

Most sports bookmakers said they could not recall such a shock result.

It is believed the longest-priced winner in the past 20 years was Richmond, against Geelong in Round 6, 1990 when it was $12.

The biggest individual bet on the West Coast Eagles was a Sportingbet Australia punter who placed $40,000 at $1.07.

Sportingbet Australia's Stephen Fletcher said his firm had about $250,000 in multiples that were knocked out when West Coast lost.

"They were coupled with everyone and everything. Even in European basketball games," Fletcher said.

Centrebet's Neil Evans said 92 per cent of bets on the match were for a West Coast win.

Evans said he went back through his company's records and it was their best ever result on a match.

TAB Sportsbet's Gary Davies said more punters backed Brisbane at $8.50 than took the short odds on offer for the West Coast.

A Darwin Sportsbet punter placed $20,000 on West Coast at three-quarter time at the odds of $1.45.

Darwin Sportsbet's Phil Hannah said the Brisbane result was a massive relief for bookmakers as punters had been spot on with the other games in the round.

Flemington Sportsbet's Norm Short described the result from the multiples for his firm as "a world record".

One Centrebet punter took advantage of the price on offer on Brisbane placing $2000 on them at $10.25.
