That's an extreme.
What i'm saying isn't an extreme moron, rather, just a reasonable measure to keep patrons who SHOULD NOT be there at that time of day somewhere else but a nearby pokie venue.
Just to take the temptation away for a few hours.
Thats all.
Stop being so freakin unreasonable here.

And titty car??

Far be it from me to be called prude, but I agree with your ethical call on this one, SS.
Your points are valid, as are your opponents. I also think there's a level of social or ethical community responsibility that should not be abrogated within community style clubs.

I think SS's (and anyones for that matter) concerns are valid, but I just don't agree (as CD would say - personal opinion only) that trading hours/opening times are the issue ... In this day and age online gaming is available 24 hours a day.

There are probably as many people (if not more) who suffer from alcoholism or cigarette addiction, which would be just as worthy of major attention.

I wasn't trying to take the piss with my posts, nor was it related specifically to the NFC, I just think as a society we should do whatever we can to assist people with addiction problems, but at a certain point each individual needs to accept responsibility for their own actions and must stand on their on two feet in addressing it at some time.

I think all points made are valid - but online gaming is not representative of a community based socially responsible club.
Still, we're only talking here of 2 hours opening time; I just think 10:00 am would have been more financially savvy as well - unfortunately I have seen the punters walking in wherever they can first light, so you'll get 8 am trade*.

Hey Silicone. Wake up and smell the roses mate as not everyone works 9-5. Some people on shift work that have worked all night may be coming home from a hard nights work looking for a beer and a bet.

Not all body clocks are the same.

Anyhow, was anyone there today to advise wether the joint is OK?
Even if they got there at 0800 I'd like to hear thoughts on it (the joint, not Pokie addiction).
Not in myneck of the woods, so doubt wether I'd get to see it in the near future.

Hooray - I've been waiting since this topic first surfaced to mention the crap name but I didn't want to give anymore ammo to the anti-North crusade led by topsy so I held back (but it's been killing me!) until someone else mentioned it.

Looks like a nice prems but very small dining area (and could never be expanded on the current site size) and clearly going by the set up and size it is just been designed as a "gaming den" with a bit of a bistro and bar. The fact that Nwd wanted it open at 8.00 a.m. smacks of desperation to squeeze every dollar out of the pokies it can but good on them for asking if the Govt. and it's supposed support of solving problem gambling allowed it - more bottom line money for them of course?

I am not sure the venue lends it self to any sort of reasonable change re the pending smoking legislisation changes late this year but time will tell how that affects not only Nwd but all clubs profit lines.

Northern Tavern:
Opening Times:
Gaming Room:
Monday to Saturday 9am to 3am
Sunday 9am to midnight

Grand North:
Opening Times:
Gaming & Bar:
Monday to Wednesday 9am to midnight
Thursday to Saturday 9am to 3am
Sunday 9am to 11pm

Luck North aren't desperate and can wait that extra hour every day until the Pokie friendly time of 9am. At least the mums would have had time to drop the kids off @ School, rather then the Norwood Mums who must put them in OSH first.

Maybe so but if you read it my comment in full you will see that it is a crack at the Govt. as much as Nwd who are playing by the allowable rules and good luck to them. Sorry if my opinion doesn't sit well with you so tough titties!

The very ethics of letting anyone use a poker machine at that hour is wrong.
Who gets the craving to play the jinglies at that hour.
3am etc there are people who have been going out that night that might come in hammer drunk or something, or using it as a (weird) social occaision.
People wanting to use a poker machine at 8am are people in need of help.
The opening times encourage this.
And i think, as should anyone with a decent sense of ethics, is wrong.
My football club has pokies.
I don't mind them being there, but i CERTAINLY don't like some of the people it attracts near the club.
The club opens at 10am regularly, and 11 on a public holiday.
Those hours are reasonable.
8am is just plain ridiculous, for the staff it has to hire, the cost of running it, and the amount of patrons they will get at that hour.
Not to mention encouraging people to feed their addiction.

I tend to agree. The only people I have ever met who have played poker machines at all have been people who could not really afford the inevitable losses, so I wonder about the ethics of anybody who provides them at all.... especially when I have heard of the venues giving them free booze to encourage them.

Then the same applies to the few people I know who smoke - they can't really afford that cost either.

Then if we look at excess drinking.....

Then I'm obviously biased because I don't do any of them, which may be a factor in why I could afford to.

Good luck to the Legs with the new venue.

By law venues must close for a minimum of 6 hours per day.
We operate 9am to 3am except for Sunday when is 9am to 1am at our venue on Port Rd.

Seems to suit our position with passing trade and shift workers in the local area as we have some companies nearby with 24 hour operations.

Agreed some folk sadly have problems gambling as with other things - alcohol, smoking etc.
Many Many more - the vast majority have a great time using these facilities in a sane and responsible manner.
This is why clubs strongly adhere to all the anti excessive gambling rules and support the assistance programmes for those who may need that help.

Just got back, quite a nice place, they said they have plans to buy the cheesecake shop next door and extend the carpark, also had a problem with the floor near the bar, will need to be ripped up and re-done.
very nice inside, only thing is its fairly small, there was probably only 8 tables for people to sit at in the Bistro, and a couple chairs and tables throughout the place.
Very nice area outside with chairs tables and shadecloths.
