Jars puts hand up for Dees
05 July 2007 Herald Sun
Daryl Timms

FLAMBOYANT North Adelaide coach Andrew Jarman plans to apply for the Melbourne coaching job vacated last week by Neale Daniher.

Jarman, a former Adelaide Crow's player, said yesterday he felt the time was right to seek an AFL job.

In his fourth year as North Adelaide coach, Jarman, 41, said he had the experience to go the next step.

"I have been speaking to mentors who have said 'why don't you put a resume in'," Jarman said. "I wouldn't mind going through the process. I have been through one and you just never know.

"I'm 41 now and they say you have to be in the system and be an assistant coach and I agree with it.

"But I have done the hard yards here."

Jarman said his role as a football commentator with Melbourne radio station SEN had allowed him to monitor AFL games.

"It's been great to get involved with the AFL again," he said.

"The game has changed, but not much in my eyes. You need to play a style of game which is going to be attractive to your fans."

Jarman, who played 110 games for the Crows from 1991-96, said he had nothing to lose by applying.

"You never know what is out there," he said.

Sportingbet.com.au is yet to include Jarman in its market but he is included in the "other coach" category to coach Melbourne in 2008 but his odds are sure to blow.

Sportingbet's latest market is: Other Coach $3.50, Chris Connolly $5, Todd Viney $5.50, Mark Riley $6.50, Guy McKenna $9, Michael Voss $10, Chris Bond $10, Mark Harvey $13, John Longmire $13, Gary O'Donnell $17, Peter Sumich $21, Brian Royal $26, Gary Ayres $41.
He's still my hero even if he is a little bit crap.

Been waiting for someone to put this up.

Interesting to see how the 'get rid of Jars faction' feels about this.

Also - who would be in the gun to replace him if he went? Has North got an annointed successor?

The name 'A. Jarman' certainly looks pretty lightweight next to some of those other candidates.

Good luck to him though. I would think no less than a North flag this year would be enough to have him seriously in the frame.

Good luck to Jars I feel he will do really well coaching Melbourne. Darren will go over with him and the North will need to appoint someone who will need a coaching job next season lets see who will be looking Darren Mead, Micheal Aish, Brodie Atkinson, The Weed

I reckon theres more chance of Punky turning and barracking for the Bays than Jars getting that coaching gig at the end of this year....

needs to be an assistant first....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Jars wouldn't have a hope in hell at an AFL job IMHO but if he did get one I certainly wouldn't be shedding a tear.

Can you elaborate on the animosity towards Jars Wedgie? From my outsiders view, he seems to have done a pretty good job since he took over the bottom of the ladder Roosters. As much as it hurts me to say it you'd be one of the two teams I'd be tipping to play in the GF this year if I had to put my house on it...

I wouldn't call it animosity (well not now Im over the Hargs sacking) just a disinterest.
He's done some great things for the club although I think anyone could have walked into the coaches role (with the possible exception of D.Hart, M.Fynn or C.McDermott) and improved North as we suddenly went from being broke to having the most income in the league.
His motivation is great and he's great at attracting footballers to the club.
Its a few behind the scenes things that have made me 'disinterested' not to mention some of the stupid ignorant comments he makes at time but that has its plusses too as it attracts publicity.
Hmm, maybe its just me and North coaches, haven't really liked one since Mick Nunan!
Give me Rick Macgowan anyday.

Also on a personal level I must add that we get along fine, he's always been nice to me and I to him in return, he's always been courteous to me and is a different bloke away from the spotlight. I might be lucky though as Ive heard some different stories with him on a personal level from others but you can only treat a guy like he treats you I say.

Cheers Wedgie. Interesting to read your comments. I must admit, when North named Jarman I thought WTF, this guy's an A Grade Goose. I have been surprised at the success of the Roosters over the last few years and not being privvy to the inside goss can only base my opinion on those results...

Good luck to him, if that is what he wants then hopefully he gets the job, he was a great player and is a great SANFL coach.

There certainley is a school of thought that suggests that an AFL coach must be an Assistant Coach first. I dont agree, SANFL coaching is nothing like as easy as people might think that it is. Rick MacGowan is one example of someone who has done really well with a list considered by many "experts" at the start of the year as average. Anyone that can take an SANFL club from bottom to being a competitive force in the finals as A Jarman has should be given some consideration for the top job. An AFL Assistant coach on the other hand has a much more limited scope to make decisions, so their ability could be considered to be more of a unknown quantity.

A few dummy spits behind the scenes about various decisions for one...when Jars doesn't get things EXACTLY how he wants he (allegedly) has some famous spits down there in all directions...forgetting that a few people he's spat at are major influences for him getting the job (allegedly) ;-)

Given Hargys form at Port, I think jars can be justified in his decision.

Also Wedgie, you mention North went from no income to having plenty and ANy coach (bar 3 ) would've resurrected North.
Ask that same question to South and West fans and see if they think money brings success.

i reckon you're being harsh on Jars, I don't know the behind the scenes stuff you mention but I think you could do a lot worse than him.
