Could the bye have come at a worst time.

Postby eaglehaslanded » Mon Jul 09, 2007 9:40 am

After travelling down to Alberton and grinding out a gutsy 2 point win and then to follow that up we demolished westies at the true home of the Eagles (Thebarton). It seems the Eagles finals ambitions are well and truly back on track. Sitting a game clear in fourth position could the bye have come at a worst time. I know it maybe good in the sense that it gives a couple of senior players an extra week to rest up but seriously we are on a roll I don't want the bye now.

It's possible that the bye has come at the wrong time, but sometimes it comes at the right time as well. Each team has a bye that comes at the wrong time and at the right time.

Not sure that pipping Port by two points and beating up on West could be considered being "on a roll" there ehl.

But "Could the bye have come at a worst time?" for the Eagles. On balance, probably no (IMHO), considering -

- The first two byes have been followed up with denting losses to Centrals (who, in fairness, were also coming off a bye) and Norwood. This time around the Eagles face Glenelg (and they're far from the worst side going around.)

- More importantly, the Eagles will have an uninterrupted eight match run into the finals against all sides except Port (Glenelg twice). The positive is having plenty of time to get up a head of steam and prove their premiership credentials. However it means they must finish top three to have any chance of rest time between R15 and October.

A win is still a win straydog no matter how good the opposition you still need to get the job done on the day. We're 2 on the trot now, looking good a game clear in fourth spot. I'm worried the momentum built with the last 2 wins will be spoilt with the bye. Glenelg @ Woodville and then Norwood @ Coopers the week after I guess that either one way or the other our fate will probably be sealed by the end of round 17.

I think what StrayDog is getting at is that you've only had the two wins over 8th and 9th, and that's not quite worth getting out the hymn sheet for just yet.

Very true Snappy Tom .But I should point out that when wwt played port they had knocked WWT out of the 5 after they had drawn a game with glenelg.
But your correct it was a great win saturday but it was against bottom placed Westies.Who did beat WWT their previous match.

But it gives all "47" of your injured players another week to get ready for their game against Glenelg. Dont rush em back though...you wouldnt want them to be underdone

Apart from 47 players, try 11 now ;), precisely. :)

It will be interesting to see how Fuller goes about things with selection after the bye. Should have Fiacchi, Colville, Batsanis and Rugolo available as well as the state under 18's and Paul Stewart and Klun will be pushing for selection after a run in the reserves last weekend.

James Stewart has taken his opportunity with the absence of other small backmen in Pete Fiacchi and Sam Fairclough and should retain his spot. Giuffreda has also impressed at Full Back and already kept Paul Stewart out of the side last weekend.

Would imagine Colville, Batsanis and Rugolo will come back through the reserves and Fairclough, P Stewart and Fiacchi will most likely be pushing for selection. I'd probably just make the two changes of P Stewart in for Fitzgerald and Fiacchi in for Pavlich.

I can't believe someone has posted a topic complaining about the bye. The only issue this year re the bye is the way the league programmed them for most clubs e.g. North 2 byes in the first 7 rounds!

The bye is a fact of life and has been with us since 1991. I'm more annoyed by how many Sunday games we play this year. I'd rather play all Saturdays as a preference and the odd Friday night game early in the season before the cold really sets in.

If you speak to players they actually like the weeks off during the season to recharge the batteries etc and personally speaking North are looking fwd to their bye break in two weeks as we have a few blokes running on near empty with niggling injuries. From a fans point of view the bye helps with doing other things and it also helps clubs re prgramming their major fundraising functions on a bye weekend without having to try and squeeze in football as well.

You Eagles fans wouldn't be complaining if your got started a bit earlier in the year instead of waiting for the last two rounds to get going and blaming the bye for a possible loss of momentum! I would have thought with your large injury list it would be a blessing?
