Daniel Schell & other Central players Ive met

Postby Wedgie » Sun Jul 22, 2007 10:40 pm

I think I mentioned this in another thread but I was lucky enough to catch up with Daniel Schell before the game today as he was doing special comments on Life Fm and I got to meet him when talking to a few local media stars in Phil Herden, Robbie Douglas and Chris Kendall.
Daniel is all class, an absolute pleasure to talk too, very humble and a great guy.
Every Central player I come across is very similar including Chris Gowans when I met him at a club in the off season a few years ago.
Central fans should be very proud (and I know they are) of not only the great players they have at their club but the great people they have at their club.
Despite them absolutely dominating the comp this century their players (including Rick Magowan who Ive met a few times) are the nicest humblest guys you'd ever meet always wanting to chat about footy.
Class off the field and class on the field.
Its probably why they're as good as they are.
Fully class act Central, well done.
Be proud Doggy fans, I know you are.

he was a year ahead at trinity college, always seemed to have his head screwed on right. i think his uncle and cousin were at the school too as teacher/student.

i thought his comms today were fantastic, knowledgable and said all the right things and didnt waffle on, maybe a career after footy for him?

That Trinity connection sounds about right Jimmy.

On another nopte - I know a few Doggies players. But after the first game of the season I was introduced to Nathan Grima - another nice bloke. Was happy to chat.

Great post Wedgie. I agree with your sentiments. I spoke to Ian Callinan for the first time after the west game and he is exactly the same.

Doggies players simply love their footy. Seems to be a quality/attitude that Kris Grant seems to be able to find in his recruits.

As for Quinton Graham he is a madman but a legend. Very similar to Joey Bulta (Josh Coulter).

Thanks for the positive comments re our players, Wedgie. I fully support what you said. Having quality people at the club, both on and off field) is the main reason why we are having the success that we are. There is no way a player will be recruited to Central if he is not of decent character, irrespective of how good a footballer he is. The character of the individual comes before playing skills at Central and has done all this millennium. Chad O'Sullivan is another one worthy of a mention. He lives down the Port, saw a mate of mine walking to the bus stop at the Port with a Central scarf on, pulled over and gave my mate a lift to the game at Elizabeth. A true gentleman!
Cheers!

Yeah I think I read about that O'Sullivan story in the paper and thought about what a class act he must be. As Richie Benaud would say, "top effort that".

Thanks for this thread Wedgie. The players that I have met have all been down to earth good blokes. I'd like to put a special mention in for the Gowans x2. Have spent a bit of time with them and they are the most easy going friendly blokes you could meet. Once they pull on the guernsey and run out onto the field they are totally focussed. Thats what I call a real professional attitude, so up yours everyone who has bagged them. :)

Roy Laird is another reputed to be a top bloke. I know I've made the odd comment to the players and anything I've said has been acknowledged, even by an injured player who might prefer to remain left alone. To be fair thought I've not had much to do with opposition players so can't really comment too much. Worked with a former South player, and he was also a top bloke. He usually agreed with my anti south sentiments most of the time actually! At the time he was one very frustrated player but always willing to chat. Unfortunately for me the first time we lined up against South was that 40 degree game at Noarlunga when they got up. He was sick off work with food poisoning all week and ended up playing a ripper!. Obviously I tried to make sure I didn't have to cross paths with him much on the Monday.

I've heard that in their spare time they save babies from burning houses and rescue cats stuck in high trees. It just doesn't make sense. I thought nice guys were supposed to finish last?

They'd have to be!

Seriously though, it is good to see positive news about players who represent footy in this state. I'm sure 99% do the right thing and do plenty of good for society, but often it's the 1% we hear about.

I met the Gowans boys at the Alma one night and found them to be excellent lads, who were good for a laugh and a chat over a whiskey or two.

Met a young lad on Saturday night who I think captain's the Dogs U/19's, Adam Minervini and he came across as a good bloke too.

Also have a close mate who works with Adam Switala and never has anything but good things to say about him .. So yeah, they really sound as though they have themselves a quality bunch of people down at the Ponderosa.

Switty is a top bloke considering he grew up a West Adelaide supporter aswell.

Scott Dutschke is a hilarious young bloke. Matt Slade is champion aswell.
