I've lived in a household and family in the shadow of extreme mental illness. I'll stick with my opinion.

I was having this exact debate with Mrs. Valleys the other night when the news first broke. She came out with that exact line "only men do this". Very naive view to have.

According to this article the murderer was aware he had a mental illness and chose not to act on it.

Certainly feel for the family and friends but as for the guy himself - piece of human excrement.

I find the suggestion of naming an award or medal after him at the footy club entirely inappropriate. Hopefully that doesn't happen.

Agreed, it's terrible all round but you don't take your innocent kids with you just to punish your wife, presumably it's usually the story with these things. She had probably told him she was going to leave him and take the kids with her.

OR .. The bloke's mental state was in such a bad way that he just didn't view the world in any semblance of a normal manner. Noone in their right mind murders children, so there was something clearly broken upstairs imho. Whether that's right or wrong, it's tragic either way.

Depending on the specifics of the mental illness he suffered, his moral compass could have been f**ked due to no fault of his own. Just genetics.

My dad never hurt anyone. But it took him to fail a suicide attempt once to seek treatment.

He heard voices telling him things about our immediate family. His voices affected him most days. He'd hear someone at work say my mum was cheating on him. He heard people in social situations say things about him. He thought people were setting him up.

Eventually he got to the point where his last ditch effort to save his own life was to go to the police and say he did something criminal that would have got him locked up for a long time, that when checked out, was totally untrue.

He tried to get sent to prison, because he knew if he was out in the world, he would die.

The next day I got the call from Mum.

This is why i dont think people should judge the actions of someone with mental illness until they have lived it.

Don't assume because you know somethings wrong, that people that seem totally normal can control their own minds.

HH3 I most certainly empathise with you mate, and I can't imagine what it's like. And I am truly sorry.

But in this instance I can't have any sympathy for this bloke, it sickens me that someone can do that, mentally affected or not. Maybe my opinions changed since I've come a dad, I don't know. It makes me mad!!!

Sorry to read that HH3, that's rough.

I do agree with your last line- sadly, the only person that will ever know what was going through his mind (right or wrong), is him.

Bloody Hell HH3, sorry to hear what you and you're family have been through.

I know someone who struggled mentally, and unfortunately it cost her childs life. I think you're spot on HH, unless you've personally suffered or been close enough to someone to see it regularly, it's really hard to understand a persons actions, thoughts, etc.

Would your opinions be the same if the dad survived?

Yes. I feel the same way about the guy that just got sentenced for killing his son on Gorge Rd at Athelstone. The tried to kill himself too, but failed.

These people aren't in control. At all.

Have a read. His wife talks about the guy and what it was like towards the end.

Should we look at a way of weeding these people out of society if they're going to committ atrocities on innocent people and then be found not guilty of murder?
IMHO anyone who kills another person deliberately has a mental illness of some sort so should all murderers be found not guilty?

Not really.

If someone kills for gain. (money, revenge, etc) they are not necessarily mentally ill.

How would you weed out mentally ill people? And how would you know if someone's mentally ill before they do something to bring it to peoples attention?

Something like that would just drive people with mental problems back underground, instead of openly talking about it, like is being promoted.

My dad never hurt anybody but himself. Should people like him be weeded out, just in case?
