Having seen this statement a couple of times now I am wondering is this unusual in the SAAFL.

no, not particularly.. very much dependent on the club I suppose.. I notice that clubs with a strong juniors tend to have more lads hang around as they grew up together and are close with a lot of the A grade boys. I just noticed that nearly every single one of the Portland boys hung around after quite a big loss which was good to see.
