A National football Carnival.

Postby Strawb » Mon Feb 27, 2006 8:42 pm

I was wondering and thinking about the old carnival days and how they where played every four years and how the leagues would compete against each other for the Bragging rights of Australia. And i had the idea that we should bring it back but change it a little and have the leagues like the VFL, SANFL, WAFL, NTFL, TFL, and so forth playing off for the title of Australian champions. I feel that it would be great instead of what we are getting at the moment the SANFL vs. the WAFL or VFL. They should play each other once a year and make it interesting. South Australia won the last carnival back in 1988 and i feel for the interest of state footy it should be brought back because people will attend of support their state and it would give the other leagues a chance to see where they are at compaired to the other leagues. It might improve local footy in the long term and stick it up the AwFuL and prove that we will support State footy and to bring it back instead of the Crap that is offered to us now. I am not much of an international rules fan and i wish we still had State of Origin Football. I just feel it is time to bring back the carnivals every four years becuase i know i will try and attend them if they where brought back.

Sounds great but it really works best with just Vic, WA & SA. It gets a bit soulless when you start adding NSW etc. Mind you, didn't SA lose to NSW in the 80s?

Keep it to the Big Three. Any Qld or NSW side is basically going to be a Swans or Lions reserves team.

We didn't.

But Victoria did.

In the mud at the SCG.

Watching a crestfallen Teddy Whitten after the match was priceless.

What I recall most is the Victorian coach Billy Goggin who was absolutely speechless, as though he possibility of losing to NSW never occurred to him until it actually happened ... and even then he couldn't believe it. The look on his face said it all.

spli round

Postby redden whites » Tue Feb 28, 2006 8:59 pm

We might be a bit harsh in the Vics here .I'm pretty sure that that year was the year there was the most ridiculous situation with the big V selection criteria..Wasn't there a split round one week and half the Vic sides played and the team was selected from the rested half only. Then the next week the reverse happened and that side played Tassie.

I believe Tasmania beat a Malcolm Blight-led Victoria at around this time.

I for one have been advocating a Tri-State series between the VFL, SANFL and WAFL rep teams to be held annually. I think it'd provide for some exciting, high-standard contests if the best players get picked.

The level below would probably be a combined VCFL team, VMFL team, then the Tassie, ACT, NT, NSW and QLD league teams among others.
