Can't be "split", if he's playing and is on a $500k salary that's what goes on the books.

If I was CEY I'd be asking for a trade.

He might have been told Thompson's spot is his, if he takes it off him over summer.

Might do a handshake though and run him at $200k with the promise of an inflated coaching wage from 2018 onward?

Was thinking he might get contracted to play in 2017 for $150,000 (normally $250,000)

In 2018 to coach pay him $350,000 (normally $250,000), maybe a way around the salary cap

True, but I'd say the forensics department at AFL house would like something like that to investigate.

Coaching departments have a "soft" cap, so I can only assume the AFL gets the salary numbers, so if he gets $150 next year and $500k the year after and most coaches are on $250k....questions, asked.

Anywho, moot point as Trigg is no longer there.

The offer to Vickery from the hawks is now on the table. Richmomd have 3 days to decide.

Richmond have to match and trade, even if they only end up with a 3rd rounder...at least take one pick away from the Hawks.

Surely he would be advised to go the Hawks by his family/management....the hype here in Adelaide would be unbearable for the kid, esp as he isn't a 1st or 2nd rounder.

Rowey would be pulling himself stupid just at the thought of another Jarman being at the crows.

Jack Steele has nominated the Saints. Will probably cost them a future second rounder so a good get by them

Adelaide veteran Scott Thompson will move on to the next stage of his career by starting a coaching apprenticeship.
Thompson will begin a role as a player-coach at the Crows next season as his AFL career winds to a close, making way for younger players.
It is the first step in what looms as a coaching career for the 32-year-old, as reported in The Advertiser.
Thompson's manager Michael Doughty confirmed the news.
"It will be a little different for 'Thommo' - in some capacity he will be playing and the role will have coaching to it as well," he said.
"He won't be guaranteed his spot in the 22 - and 'Thommo' is aware other players have to be given opportunities. But Scott will be there to drive (playing and training) standards.
"And he also will move on to the next stage - coaching."

If the Crows are serious about improving their midfield on game day then Thompson should be strapped to a chair in the coaches box. He's finished as a midfielder/AFL footballer.

Far from the worst performer in the last final agaisnt Sydney. There were times when it was Thompson alone who was proving to be a threat with his ball winning and tackling. He's not the player he was, but based on his 2016 form, clearly in the best 22.

It's 2017 next year.
A quality midfielder with 10 years of football in front of him is being held back because of Thompson deciding he will play on at the end of each season, since when do players call the shots.
Crows need to show some balls for a change, they have been piss poor at making tough decisions since Blight left.
Porps should have been traded , McKay as well, Danger should have been shown the door for not re signing in 2014, everyone knew he was leaving, the list goes on, now it's Thompson.
Toughen up Crows.

Beat me to it CC. They'll lose Lyon pretty much because Thompson is holding on for another year. The comment about him being in the best 22 is fair, but long term, it's better to keep a younger player than lose him because of a 32yo who is 'capped' in his ability and output.

You can't always be thinking about 5 years down the track. Sometimes you have to look at the next 12 months. Thompson isn't holding Lyons out of the team and if the likes of Ellis-Yolman, Harrison Wigg etc aren't able to get past Scott Thompson then I question what level they will ever get to. We aren't talking about a club with 4 or 5 guys whose retirement is imminent, just one. Cutting Thompson won't save much, if anything, from the salary cap if replaced by a draftee. Not to mention the spot he's taking on the list isn't the 23rd best player, it's the 41st best player.
