At a powerlifting meet he tested positive for a banned 'in-competition' stimulant commonly found in pre-workouts and copped a standard two-year ban from any sports adhering to the ASADA code. A simple mistake with an unfortunate consequence. I was due to compete last year and was warned to avoid any pre-workouts (never bothered with them though).

How many footballers load up on pre-workouts every week? Unfortunately we have no testing at an amateur football level. Powerlifting Australia has a very stringent process on the other hand.

Yup, it's a supp that you take before training for focus, energy, endurance etc. They're generally proprietary blends and most of them contain stimulants, many of which are banned (in-competition) by WADA.

From anecdotal evidence, I'm confident in suggesting that some footballers take pre-workouts before matches. What pre-workouts they use I couldn't tell you... there are so, so many different ones available, and not all would contain banned stimulants.

Full list for 2017 can be found here:

https://wada-main-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/resources/files/2016-09-29_-_wada_prohibited_list_2017_eng_final.pdf

The thing is, you've got to be careful when cross checking. A supp may list Norsynephrine, which isn't on the WADA list specifically, but may actually make you test positive for Octopamine due to being closely related chemically.

So basically, don't take these supps if you're subject to in-comp testing.

I'm off the opinion they do **** all

You're best off with a good mix of BCAAs and Glucose on game day

I know some blokes who swear by them. Won't take the field without them. Whether it's a placebo or not who knows?

Placebo. They do nothing to counter lactic acid or glycogen depletion.

You're better off making your own mix with gatorade powder, BCAAs, citrulline malate and acetyl carnitine. And taking a small dose of beta alanine every day during football season.
