If that's the case I'd say fly home Monday and both sides will get Sunday fixtures at home the next week, probably a twilight one for one side and late afternoon for the other.

China Southern don't go direct to Shanghai though. They are based out of Guangzhou so would require a flight change and a bit of stuffing around. I don't think Adelaide has any direct flights to Shanghai as far as I know

Correct, about 2 hours. The main thing is Adelaide > mainland China direct, no stop in Singapore.

One away game I won't be looking at going to.

True, although a little pedantic as Cathay Pacific fly direct to Hong Kong and I would easily rate them as the best airline going to that part of the world. I love the area so I would definitely go if you were playing us

Dude, have you not flown Singapore before?

Great initiative Port. I would love to go to this one, but who would I barrack for? Perhaps the gumption shown by Port, and the fact they'll be the regular team going to Shanghai every year would cause me to lean towards them.
Koch has really opened a massive door for Port here. Nothing is certain as yet, but IF this gamble pays off. Strewth, how many times does the population of Australia fit into China's? About 60 these days?

Flown Singapore many times and love them but the last couple of trips I've felt they have slipped. Cathay to Hong Kong are always fantastic and have used them to Europe and that was also top notch

I haven't flown for two and a half years now, but loved Singapore as a stopover from Fukuoka back in the day.
Flew Cathay once, through Taiwan/Hong Kong. Was good, might give it a try again next time.

Surely a bye for both sides will be scheduled for the following week. Looking forward to the fixture release to see how it all ties together.

AFL have said no byes.

Fox Footy saying they will have a bye the week after

A month ago they said no byes, must have been some negotiations there, I see they get no mid season bye though.

I'm happy for it to become a annual event as long as Port give up a home game for it.

It would be an interesting twist if the AFL scheduled them to play the Suns each year. The crowd would likely identify with the red and yellow better than the teal. With it being a Suns' home game, I wonder what benefits that actually entails? Do they get to promote it, decorate the stadium in their colours, hang their name everywhere? Surely the Power would not hand such advantages over to a team wearing the Chinese colours after Port made all the running in making this game happen?

I believe Port will be the "home" team - as per below article.

Port "buy" a home game off the Suns, still 11 games at Adelaide Oval.

I think with the (hate the term) clean skin stadium it will be a joint venture as far as marketing opportunities for the two clubs. The Suns aren't silly, they've seen someone else do all the heavy lifting and open the door for them. Very clever to get involved.

One of their key sponsors is telecommunications company Huawei, it's not mistake the Suns want a piece of this too.

And the AFL bank-roll them and will be used when or where the AFL see fit to push the latest vogue marketing agenda..

Another reason why the Suns "experiment" will continue at the expense of Southern markets
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Only this year. A few other clubs have kicked up a stink so I'd imagine if they want it to continue in the future they will have to give up a home game.

Should've played the Shanghai match in round 23 so GC and Port can start their end of season trip already abroad.

I see it the other way. The Sun could be seen as Japanese, as in the Rising sun. They even re-engineered a building design in Shanghai because it had a circular motif in it. The design was modified so the 'space' in the building was rectangular in shape. These blokes haven't forgotten the Japanese rampage in their country back in the thirties.

Therisingsuns? That'll pack it out.
Though if we are only going with people who actually remember the 1936/37 invasion we will need facilities to cope with an influx of 50,000 citizens aged 80 or over. I think the power might be aiming for a younger crowd.

isnt this the same comment heard at the start when this was proposed that "nobody will give up their home". Maybe other clubs see this as a massive opportunity as well. stop making things up Jim ;)

Or maybe the Suns will gladly give up a home game each year?
If things go well, the cash making potential goes beyond the Australian notion of a good pay day. The Suns get bugger all support and were only created yesterday in any case. Regular trips to Shanghai would be worth the loss of a home game on the Gold Coast in a heart beat.... potentially.

KT confirmed the China takes over the NT $$$ and efforts.

Interesting thing he said, was they are still trying to make it cost neutral, so they are still losing money with just blue sky hope that it makes them a $ one day.

Isnt that how most investments start out?

Fair to say the Chinese market has potential for growth.

Partnerships will flow now the game has been confirmed and locked in, game day sponsor Ausgold Mining Group were awaiting the confirmation of the match before they got on board, that's now taking place. The expectation is this year will be cost neutral.

As far as the NT goes we will still have an impact via our cultural programs, it won't be as much as it had been previously but we'll still have a footprint. If the China excursion bears enough fruit you'd think the programs will only be enhanced. As KT said, to ask for China, Anzac Day and a NT would have been stretching the friendship with the AFL.
