I think that the point you've made in the first sentence of your quote is also why this story would be of interest to many people. She got sacked because of something that happened in her own time, albeit after a work function.
Pretty screwy reason to lose your job and I'm sure most would agree. Hence most would be interested to hear about the case and whether the same could happen to them.
Again, it was Telstra that could be perceived to have ruined her life. Not the salacious media.
