COLLINGWOOD has roared back to No.1 on the AFL’s membership ladder in a ringing endorsement of the club’s direction from fans.

In official AFL figures seen by the Herald Sun, Collingwood has leapfrogged Hawthorn with 75,879 paid-up members as total AFL memberships rose 3.7 per cent.

The AFL has exceeded 900,000 members for the first time.

Twelve of the 18 clubs have made membership gains this year and 10 have reached record memberships.

The Pies recorded a 1.6 per cent jump in membership to go ahead of Hawthorn (75,663), Richmond (72,669) and Essendon (67,768).

But while Greater Western Sydney has recorded a sensational 37 per cent growth to rise to 20,944 members, Gold Coast’s figures are a cause for concern.

The Suns’ membership slumped 9.25 per cent to 11,665 paid-up members this year — 9000 fewer than the Giants.

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire said the Pies members who had stayed strong would be rewarded next year.

The club will not play finals for a fourth consecutive season.

“It’s been a disappointing year for us, but the thing that keeps us going is membership,’’ he said.

“It’s fantastic that big Victorian clubs like Essendon, Richmond, Hawthorn and Geelong continue to grow.

“In a period where it’s been tough for Pies fans, they have voted with their membership dollars. We want to make sure they get rewarded next year.”

The figures are based on numbers after the July 31 deadline and include only games-based memberships, not social memberships.

They should normalise them to 11 game equivalent memberships. Or tell us revenue from membership.

Because it makes no sense that membership grows at the crows for instance given they sell out the stadium every week. So ts clearly an increase in 3 game memberships driving those figures

All clubs financial statements will have figures for membership revenue and the AFL usually releases one aswell

I'm not one to talk too much about crowd figures but in many matches this season it looks like we are seeing a lot more empty seats. Collingwood games in particular appear to be more sparsely attended. Too lazy to do research, just a perception.

At least we're top of something.

Carlton - the sleeping giant. Those memberships are pretty dire for a club with such a large fan base.

Carlton - Where to for them? 7 wins last year and only 5 this year with Hawthorn and Sydney to come. Playing a very ordinary brand of football, looks like they could lose Casboult and perhaps Gibbs ( depending on what happens in Adelaide's list management ) and while they've had several rising star nominees this year they look to be a long, long way off a resurrection.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

You'd think they'd need change at the top. The low memberships are about as much as how the club is marketing itself and performing off-field, as what's happening on field.

I think they are on the right track. They have finally decided against the quick fix and have started a long rebuild. Have started building there defence and look to have 5-10 year decent defence together, they will move on to the midfield over the next couple of years. Still a big concern that by time the kids get up to speed their best players like Gibbs, Murphy, Kreuzer will be gone

Long gone indeed and they're coming from a long, long way back and they, I think, are in the unenviable position that Brisbane are in where talented younger players might not hang around to see the process out when clubs at the pointy end of the ladder come talking cash and success.
