Westies heritage guernsey

Postby Sojourner » Sun Aug 19, 2007 9:45 pm

I found this interesting snippet of history on the West Adelaide FC website, how about getting the Magenta and White guernsey out and giving it a run against South when we have our heritage round next season? The SAFC dusted off our original guernsey and brought it back for another battle this year which resulted in one of the few wins we had this year, the whole idea proved to be quite a successfull fundraiser for the club!

"On Wednesday March 31 of 1897, West Adelaide formally wrote to the S.A.F.A seeking admission to League football. This was duly granted on April 12 and hence the original programme circulated for the 1897 season was amended to six teams eliminating the weekly bye. West Adelaide had to change its colours from Magenta and White as it would have clashed with Port Adelaide and North Adelaide. The committee then decided to adopt the colours from the defunct Adelaide Football Club - Red and Black."

I wish they would get those 1970s red and black striped jumpers out.

I'd like to see the West striped guernsey too. Also the all red guernsey with the WAFC in black on the left breast would be alright to see as well.

For other clubs that haven't had one as well:

Central - I think all have been covered now, except for the first one?
Eagles - the green and gold hoops (my favourite Eagles guernsey)
Glenelg - the Gold V Panel one worn in the mid 60s'
North - the Candy Stripes - this will be worn this week, isn't it?
Norwood - The Melbourne V Panel
Port - I won't say the magenta one, but the black and white striped one
South - I think there was a similar one to the West guernsey worn with the SAFC on the left breast?
Sturt - the one worn in the 30s with the darker blue in a stripe across the front
Torrens - The Sash, or the 'braces' that were worn in the 30s (blue stripes)
Woodville - The Warriors guernsey

Dogs wore the first one in a match on 04, to celebrate 40 years since the club started playing in the league comp. Was against the Eagles too from memory.

An away guernsey is planned for next year too, looks a corker.

Norwood - The Melbourne V Panel

I am not sure but I think Norwood went "all Vic" and wore this and called themselves the "Demons" under Alan Killigrew in the late 1950s.

The older plain Navy Blue with red socks and red collar only, was much better.
EPIGENETICS - Lamarck was right!

I can't remember off hand, but if so, it wasn't the striped one or the all red WAFC one.
