Nessar & Doggett decisions seem ridiculous to me.

Maxwell the unlucky one, without doubt one of our best bats v spin.

Aaron Finch?
The bloke couldn’t make runs at Shield level when he played but is now in the Test Squad?
Am I missing something here?

I rate Doggett, but I agree with Neser and also Maxwell missing is super unlucky.. wonder what he's done wrong to constantly be on the outer.

You mean besides being an effwit?

But I do agree Maxwell should be in there before Finch at least.

1. Usman Khawaja
2. Matt Renshaw
3. Shaun Marsh
4. Travis Head
5. Mitch Marsh
6. Marnus Labuschagne
7. Tim Paine (w/k) (c)
8. Mitch Starc
9. Brendan Doggett
10. Peter Siddle
11. Nathan Lyon

That's my guess? Although may be too many lefties, and they'll opt for Finch over Head. Also may consider two spinners in Holland & Lyon but that's unlikely given the depth with batting/bowling isn't great.

Potentially may play Agar as a specialist bat too?

Worse side I’ve seen since the mid 80’s when Border was captain.
Mitch Starc the only genuine Test player there.

Oh and Gary.......

Thought similar when I was trying to work out who the "best XI" would be haha, was hard!

It's bit like picking local 3rd grade side - you pick the couple of regular blokes you know and then try to guess the gaps.

Holland will play before Doggett, they will play at least 2 spinners on those decks. That's why Siddle would have been picked as he can run in all day & they can still use Starc in short spells & Mitch M here & there. Hoping it comes down to Head & Finch for the last spot & Head's bowling gets him the nod.

Siddle has taken 37 wickets @ 16 in 7 County cricket games this year which got him in i reckon.

That's a fair few blokes on here whom I'd like to see represent Australia more than Neser...

No Smith, Warner, Hazlewood, Cummins and to a lesser extent Bancroft really shows how thin our depth is but at the same time there's some bewildering selections IMO.

Previously there's been many discussions on here about Khawaja's and Head's trouble against spin so will be interesting to see if they have both made adjustments to fix it.

Good to see Labuschage selected, seemed to always be amongst the runs in the SS last season, a young and upcoming talent who deserves his selection. I rate Jon Holland, always seems to take wickets and I am surprised he's been reselected given he has spoken out about selection in the past and is not afraid to do so.

Hopefully we can continue see Renshaw flourish in the baggy green, he was good in India and will face similar conditions in the UAE. His Queensland opening partner in Joe Burns is unlucky perhaps, along with Peter Handscomb. I'm very surprised he's not in the squad as I thought the selctors rated him highly. Say what you about him like Glenn Maxwell is another who is very unlucky I feel, looks like they're going for Head over Maxwell in test cricket aswell as ODI cricket.

Finch is an interesting one, I love him as a white ball cricketer, he'd have to be the best one day batsman in the country but he's never established himself as a red ball cricketer and his record is dead set mediocre. Obviously they think his large amount of international experience is a huge benefit and will hold him in good stead to play test cricket.

Siddle back is a surprise but they've always liked his consistency, I don't mind his selection. I haven't seen much of Doggett but he must be doing something right to be selected over Jyhe Richardson and Chris Tremain.

Michael Neser seems like nothing more than a honest toiler so his selection is bewildering. I still don't know if I rate Aston Agar.

Will be an interesting series as to how this different looking side/squad will perform.

Don't understate Lyon when naming genuine test players. He is a world class bowler, we are very lucky he's turned out to be as good as he is.
