KEVIN SHEEDY TO JOIN THE SANFL
Kevin Sheedy will join the SANFL on Friday 14 September to speak at the League’s President’s Luncheon.
When thinking of Australian Football Legends, Kevin Sheedy would top many a list. Sheedy’s remarkable career includes playing for Richmond for 13 years and coaching Essendon for 27. A three-time premiership player and four time premiership coach, Kevin has now played and coached in more games than anyone in AFL/VFL history.
Kevin played his first VFL match for the Richmond Football Club in 1967. He went on to play 251 games, becoming the 10th player in the club’s history to reach the 250-game milestone.
Sheedy coached his first match for Essendon in Round 1, 1981, against Geelong at Kardinia Park. In Round 16, 1998 Kevin coached his 416th match for the Bombers, surpassing Dick Reynold’s 415-game record as the longest serving Essendon Coach. It was in Round 5 (ANZAC Day) 2007, that Kevin coached his 618th game, entering the record books as the second-longest serving coach, behind Collingwood’s Jock McHale, who coached 714 matches during his career.
Just 10 weeks later, in Round 15, 2007 Kevin participated in his 879th official match as player and coach, surpassing McHale’s 878 game record.
On Saturday September 1, 2007 Sheedy coached his final game for the Essendon Football Club, at Subiaco Oval.
The SANFL President’s Luncheons attract between 400 and 500 guests and present an opportunity to hear speakers who have carved their successes in the worlds of sport or business. It is a great opportunity to host valued business associates in an enjoyable environment whilst mingling with some of the legends of Australian Rules Football.
At each luncheon a past SANFL player is interviewed. The September Luncheon will feature former Glenelg player, Peter Maynard.
The luncheon will be held in the Magarey Room, AAMI Stadium Function Complex on Friday, September 14, 12noon-3pm.
