First Class Cricket Talk (International and State)

Postby Adelaide Hawk » Mon Mar 13, 2006 8:24 pm

Some are calling it the greatest match of all. As someone who does not like the truncated version of the game, I look on this match as another example as to why one-day cricket is an insignicant event. Cricket should be an even contest between bat and ball. but to see bowlers getting smacked all over the park, and unable to do anything about it because of the small boundaries as well as severe bowling and fielding restrictions, it's not a contest. If I wanted to watch people tee-ing off I'd go watch golf.

Pretty hard to go past the 1975 World Cup final - West Indies v Australia.

Or the 1999 World Cup semi-final - Australia v South Africa.

Even the 1983 World Cup final - India v West Indies.

They were gripping contests, not boring slogathons.

agreed, but the one day game is made for those purposes whether we like it or not, id rather watch 5 days of tense cricket that has the chance of being a draw than a one dayer...

Can't help but think 20/20 will be the death of cricket.

Nope, will become a major boost for Test Cricket imho ... Is certainly having that affect on me, I hardly caught any of the one-dayers here over summer but try to watch as much of the TM cricket as possible!!

And FWIW I've been against the roped off sections of the boundary since it's inception.

Whilst I appreciate that it's necessary near fences for safety reasons, why do they need to have other areas cordened off with plenty of field in reserve (ie Adelaide Oval up and down)?? The conditions are still the same for each team and provides a different twist to each game with the challenges or perks of grounds of different shapes and size!

Mr MK (being South African) said that the "Bullring" in Jo'berg is very small ORDB, close to someone's backyard I suppose . Might be a while before scores get this high again but records are made to be broken!

Not having a go MK but it wasn't actually me who made that statement.
To other posters who want to put question marks against the match, games have been played on smaller grounds than this and involving more feeble opponents than this and still no one has got within a bulls roar of what was achieved on Sunday night.
