Reserves Finals 2007

Postby Wedgie » Sat Sep 08, 2007 10:35 pm

After the last round of games Glenelg ended up as Minor Premier and will get the week off.

Today at Noarlunga there was a very important game.
Last night North beat Sturt which put North temporarily in 3rd spot and with the 4th placed Panthers playing the 2nd spot Norwood the game was to decide if South could leapfrog North into the double chance and set up a repeat of South v Norwood in the Qualifying Final.
Norwood had the lead early on but South hit back hard and went in at 3/4 time with a 3 goal lead.
All was not lost for North/Norwood as the Legs were coming home with a 3 goal breeze.
It turned out not to make a difference as the bigger and stronger Panthers kicked away into the strong Northerly to record an impressive 46 point win over Norwood.

Next week's finals (times and venues TBC):

Glenelg have the week off and go straight through to the 2nd semi final.

Qualifying Final:
Norwood v South

Elimination Final:

North v Central

Tough game for North there. Dogs only injury as far as I know is Luke Cowan and with the league side out of action the reserves outfit will be pretty strong.

North despite almost getting the double chance really haven't hit the form of the past couple of years when they've taken out the premierships, a threepeat is still a chance but a bit of a longshot IMHO.
South had a hell of a lot of players with league experience today, when they drop a bloke who won the Star Search award last week you think to yourself that perhaps they're conceding a league game so they can have more chance of a ressies flag, that's sad if its the case and I hope its not.
Norwood will have to regroup after a capitulation today.

My understanding is Centrals cannot play anyone who was in their last selected 21 for their ressies team for this weeks first final? Correct me if I am wrong.

That may well be true, but reserves are picked after the league team so any players out of the league team affects the reserves too as well as any regular reserves players being injured. I'm not sure whether guys like Obst can return to reserves but the reserves can hang on to Slattery for one and if Goodrem is back he'll be in the reserves as well. Not to mention Wilson, Hadden, Leigh Westhoff and a few other guys who might otherwise have played league. It mightn't make much difference in the end, but thought it was worth a mention as some sort of factor.

No, I got your point but I was just thinking about who could and could not play? Last year when O'Hara got dropped for the Prelim and our Ressies had already qualified for the GF he wasn't then able to play in the Ressies GF despite being left out of North league team the week before. I the league team had made the GF then he would have been okay with both squads still alive so to speak. I think it had to do with having to play the last minor round in the Ressies or at least one game during the season to qualify as well. I'm not actually sure to be honest. Someone will know for what it is worth?

Not to split hairs, but with regards to the experience of the two sides:
Our side included seven players with one or more league games under their belt:
Twomey and Dylan Williams (about 20 each)
    Hunter (7)
    Squire (3)
    Sam Elliott (3)
    Troy Jacques (7) and
    Mark Fenoughty (1)
We therefore had 14 players who have not played league footy, including:
Three players in only their second reserves game (Kent, Trevena and Fergusson)
Another in his third (Redigolo) and
    One in his fifth (Pegler).
With only two (Hunter and Ryan) playing 100+ in all grades.

The Norwood side included:
    Tim Nicholas
    Matthew Bartemucci
    Paul Puopolo
    Rob Dejongh
    Mitch Sandery and
    Matthew Brunoli
With six 100+ game players (all grades), one of those (Bartemucci) 200+ games.

While both sides had a mixture of experience and youth I'd say that it was South who had the less experienced team, with 10 players still eligible for junior selection.

Today's result sets up a rematch next week in the Qualifying Final, which should be a cracker of a match.

is it possible that north and glenelg can play off in the reserves gf. Where can i buy tickets for that one?
But it was more than a victory for Greece. It was a stirring example to free people throughout the world of what a few brave men can accomplish once they refuse to submit to tyranny.

The way Glenelg seconds played yesterday it would be more like buying tickets to sit ringside and watch boxing.
Or for those of us that watch wrestling the large glenelg player number 41 i think was fighting with one vinnie ruggolo. This could be akin to rey mysterio vs the great khali.

It's even more of an indictment of Norwood's league performance if South were deliberately picking an under-strength league side and we only won by 2 goals! (I doubt if they were.)

Norwood's reserves side next week will be eligible to gain Nick Lower, Cockshell and Matt Thomas (unless the Paps don't want any of them to play, and I don't know why they would) plus from Norwood's own list Brendan Littler, Iggy Vallejo (subject to injury), Josh Donohue and the in-form Brad deVries. Of course, no doubt South will inherit a few of their league players, too, but don't know if they have any Power players who might be released to play.

South might like their chances anyway, given that changing too many players week-to-week can upset a team's balance.

Well qwerty it happened last year in the EAGLES reserves,Ron Fuller would not play AFL listed players that could not play in the league GF.IMHO this got the EAGLEs reserves to fifth spot and Rick Macgowan the coaching job at Sturt.

What's the go with Meesen? I assume he's eligible to play considering he played about 5 reserves games this year, but I highly doubt the Crows would want him risking injury if they're about to trade him.

Straight from the horse's mouth of the Norwood team manager who was kind enough to write to me on the topic:

"Once a player plays 6 league games they must play 3 of the last 5 reserves games to be eligible for Reserves finals if the League side does not qualify for Finals." That rule is only waived for AFL-listed players whose team is still alive.

John Meesen has played 7 games for Norwood league side this year (plus 5 games of seconds: 4 Norwood, 1 West Adelaide, but none in the last 5 rounds).

Kris Massie, on the other hand, has played only 5 games for Norwood this year. Enough to qualify for SANFL finals, not so many he's caught by the above rule... . Chances of him being released to play reserves finals? Zero. Which are roughly the same as the chances that Meesen would have been released even if he were eligible.

That would be the Snouts cult hero, Jason "Pumpa" Sutherland. Full marks though to Pumpa for taking himself off the ground when he knew he was starting to "lose it".

Thanks for that and that explains why O'Hara last year couldn't play in the ressies GF after being dropped from North's League team for the Preliminary Final.
