Flat 28min Quarters - A Grade

Postby S Demon » Wed Jul 31, 2019 9:33 am

There's a proposal put forward by Broadies to have flat 28-min quarters in A grade and flat 25min quarters in B/C Grade. What's everyone's thoughts on having no time on in the A grade?

Be fun to have some C Grade injury feigning shenanigans to determine A Grade Finals.

No from me.

I suggested that in the league I umpire in but only for the 3rd and 4th quarters and only if the margin was greater than 15 goals at half time.

One game I had the 3rd quarter go for 43 and a half minutes.

What if they had time on for finals? Or time on could be applied at umpires discretion still?

I would like 20min C grade, 24min B grade and 28min A grade - start at 10,12 and 2..

on average the A grade quarters would go for around 27-30mins most games so couldn't really see a problem with it.
I reckon just leave the B and C grade alone.

I like that idea. Clock stops for injuries so players can’t waste time?

Probably agree with Jo on this one, id hate to see an A grade game decided through time wasting tactics (people not giving the ball back behind the goals, faked injuries, cramping etc). Only having time on in finals could be a solution, but some minor rounds can be make or break with relegation and finals spots up for grabs.

If there is anything ive learnt from the rule changes we regularly see in the AFL, its that if there is a way to exploit a rule to give a team an advantage, the coaches will explore this as much as possible if its the difference between winning and losing.

Surely you couldn't, 1 point up with 30 seconds to play (esp with some clubs having the time on an electronic scoreboard) ball on the wing and you can boot the ball into a nearby street to kill the game.

Too much opportunity to exploit - leave as is.

No from me. Is there a reason why is it being suggested? 2 weeks back the 2nd quarter of our A grade match went for well over 40 minutes. Yes we kicked 9 goals in the quarter but the main reason why it went so long was that the wind kept blowing the footy 120 metres past the goals and into a dry creek. There are too many variables that could create controversy for me.

Main reason being to ease volunteer workload - most time keepers for A grade are long serving members who know and have experience of the time on/off procedure.. trying to get people to be time keepers would be easier with flat quarters. Once people realise what's involved they tend to not be interested anymore.

Deliberate time wasting, umpire blows time off, play resumes where kick was with 30 seconds left.

Sure there are plenty of concerns with exploiting - but how often does that happen in the B/C grades now?

Cos Broadies regular timekeeper missed a game and only 1 other person knew how to do it.

Still got a timekeeper - what's stopping him from stopping the time?

The time keeper should be watching the reserves and c’s in its entirety either way in case the umpires call for a stop to time. I fail to see why it’s even been bought up. Any reserves player with half a clue runs the clock down when things aren’t going their way and there is many ways to do it. The only way this new rule helps is in assisting teams when they are on the ropes by stopping quarters early when a team gets a decent run on.
