Roy Laird - SANFL coach of the year

Postby smac » Fri Sep 14, 2007 12:10 pm

Apparently the SANFL introduced a new award this year, Coach of the Year. Voted on by all coaches, Laird was voted number 1 by his peers through 4 separate 3-2-1 votes throughout the season. Good stuff Lairdy!

Each coach got to vote 4 times on a 3-2-1 basis?

That would guarantee that Jars ended the poll with at least 12 points...

Laird wasn't allowed to vote for himself, I assume the same for Jars. He may have wound up with 0!

I wonder how many Mickan would have got for "personality" and 1/4 and and 3/4 time speeches?

Based on success there's no disputing it going to Laird. You could even give him the coach of the decade award.
Based on club improvement you cant go past MacGowan.

He's only in his 5th year as coach, HBT.

But agree with your thoughts on Rick. Can we somehow ban SturtPeter from this thread now?

Laird's coaching record would put him in the top 2 or 3 coaches in SANFL history. His win/loss ratio must be approaching no 1.

Sturt finished 5th in 2005, 3rd in 2004, 4th in 2003, premiers in 2002. That one bad season in 2006 has distracted us I reckon.

Look at their team for Sunday and tell me that isn't a fair bit better than any team outside the top 5.

No disrespect to Rick, but I don't buy the line that this is a potential wooden-spooner massively over-achieving. They are about where they should be IMO.

Back to topic - well deserved award for Roy Laird

Well said Hondo, Im sick of this poor sturt stuff, how about Mickan getting the Bays in the finals from the bottom of the ladder after 7 games for the first time since 1999? much bigger achievement than McGowan

Your right mickan should've won it.
But it was more than a victory for Greece. It was a stirring example to free people throughout the world of what a few brave men can accomplish once they refuse to submit to tyranny.
