Hopefully he can turn things around for them and get them in the finals if not next year then in 2009.

If his plan is to Coach for an extended period say 3 years then i think it is ok, But if this is a Patch Job and by that i mean he is going to coach for one year, try and get things in place and then hand over the job to someone younger (Say a recently reitired player) then i think it is a terrible move.

For me i would have preferred South to go down the West Adelaide path and exhaust all options to find someone like Andy Collins who is a great coach and will do wonders for Westies.

Only time will tell but i am not sure this is the right move, but saying that of course will happily re-new my membership and support the boys. I Hope there is a bit of a shake up and hopefully some success is not far away.

Like other good Southies i too will renew my membership and watch this appointment with great interest. Opinion appears evenly split between a good and bad move by the club and i too can see both points of view. Was at Higgie oval recently and the MAJOR redevelopment is well under way and will look spectacular when finished, i just hope Jack doesn't cost too much because the redeveopment certainly is costing heaps.

If the club has got if finances wrong in calculating the payout of Pyman, paying Jack and servicing what is a massive debt then there will be no future for SAFC,none! However, get it right together with this coaching appiontment and this club will be a force for years to come.

I think whatever capacity John Cahill is involved in must be good for South. When was the last time they got someone with such a successful record down there? You all heard the damning report on how devicive and undermining the envirnment is out there? You need a strong respected leader to stop that sort of thing and I can't think of too many available right now who fit that bill. Cahill does. 1 year might be long enough to stop the bleeding that has been going on down there for so long and then a coach might have a chance. I don't think this is abot John Cahill bringing success. I think this is about John Cahill bringing an example of a successful approach which would hopefully bring success along later down the track.

And those who are demanding a long term coach are just out of touch. The SANFL doesn't get guys like that very often anymore. The only ones in the SANFL at the moment who have been more than 2-3 year appointments are Laird and Fuller. And both the Eagles and dogs went through a few short term coaches (Hamilton, Mickan, Wright, Jonas, Clarkson) before nabbing a coach who wanted to hang around.

Anyway, if South have yet to actually sign anyone and the process is still ongoing then they really need to stop this talk about Cahill already having been signed.

This would have been an ideal opportunity to appoint a well credentialed, energetic, younger and therefore long term coach with both short term and long term goals. Without seeing the list of applicants to see who actually applied (I very much doubt that list will be leaked. Who's hidden agenda would it benefit?), I find it hard to believe that Jack is the best option.

I disagree 100% with that. Wasnt that what Pyman was meant to be? A younger guy, long term prospect, good coaching credentials etc. Barely worked out at all.

I think Jack is exactly what South needs. A hard arse who wont take shit from anyone and will turn the place around. He doesnt need to be there long term....give him a year, two years tops to put some changes in place and try and turn them around. If anyone can do it, Jack can.

I hope he succeeds. Id love for him to make the finals next year and get some sort of success.

Jack Cahill is a legend of a coach but he has made one big mistake in putting his hand up here, his coaching ideas are now out of vogue. south have to get things back on track, the first thing they have to do is leave Noarlunga, hasn't worked at all, sure up an up and coming coach that has fresh ideas (hell there are enough floating around), clean out the deadwood so to speak from top to bottom and in 3 or 4 years they will be a good side. IMHO they have taken a backward step on this occasion

Shockingly handled by the SAFC IMHO. Needed to get the inform players the night it was done and announced the same day. If he wasn't signed until today then they should have poured water on it. The club has lost the chance to put any sort of positive spin on the announcement.

BTW, only a few years ago Cahill's outdated methods got Port to a second semi after Port were terrible for about 3 years didn't they? Can't have lost too much.

Haven't paid next season's membership yet, so here goes. The problem wasn't Pyman. The problem was the weak as water board and the sooky-la-la players who panicked at the prospect of playing finals two years in a row and ran around in ever decreasing circles till they disappeared up each others rectums. Pyman was a scapegoat of monumental proportions.

I'm praying to every god you can Google that Cahill gets the support that was withdrawn from Pyman for his stay in office. Not just for his sake, but because if we stuff this up, we might as well lease our zones to the Bays and Bloods.

Apart from that I've heard he's already recruited George Fiachi, Geof Motley, Max James and Eric Freeman.

Why were the media interivews done at Adelaide Oval? Seems strange that South wouldn't announce it or hold it at their present home ground - Noarlunga! Pretty poor form if you ask me but I'm sure Phil H will have a calculated response for this one?

Hmm but maybe Jack doesn't know the way, couldn't be bothered travelling that far (or the media couldn't be bothered) or Jack just plain forgot they moved there years ago. Maybe the senile dementia is kicking in already?

As a longstanding panther supporter and member I can assure you I will be renewing my membership this year ,as usual. I'm a great believer in the club being more important than the individuals that are it. I believe that to be the case especially with Souths current predicament.
The sub committee appointed by the board was obviously given a brief from "the Morris report", which stated that the new coach should have a good track record, plenty of experience, and an ability to withstand covert subterfuge from within and from outside the club.
Not being privy to the other candidates I believe that the successful candidate fills all the requirements of that brief.
I hope that Cahill will clear the decks of all the pondscum in the playing group that undermined Pyman as soon as he walks into the place . He will also have the profile to withstand any subterfuge presented by the "single interest group" that from time to time bobs its collective head up and attempts a coup on the board. This group , I'm led to believe also indulges in campaigns of misinformation to the playing group.
I believe that in general terms that the list is a lot better than recent performances show. This coupled with the nucleus of youth currently doing very well in the reserves competition should give the club a reasonable list next year.

Good interview by Smithy and DB on RPH tonight.
Jack sounds very keen and is keen to put something back into the SANFL especially South Adelaide where it all started for him.
Being Gentleman Jack he even ran it past the Magpies first despite not having anything to do with them these days.
Class.
Good luck to Jack, I have the treat of being able to go out to huddles and listen to coaches at times and I was in awe listening to him when coaching the Maggies in his last stint and look forward to his talks at South.

Ditto Wedgie. Fantastic interview with "the man".
I think he will bring alot of excitment down Noarlunga way.
Seems alot more approachable than previous coaches of late

All the best Jack and look forward the season ahead!! :)
