I think its time
GILCHRIST to bat at 6 or 7 in o/d games
We need big hitters in the later overs
In all due respect HODGE/HOPES/HOGG are not 6 hitters in the 6-7-8-9 spots
HOPES does well but is a run a ball player who rotates the strike
GILCHRISTs low scores opening are seemingly more frequent these days
HODGE would be better off opening and Gilchrist down the order
HADDIN must be in the team in the lower order
HAYDENS amazing form + a string of big scores is masking the GILCHRIST/HODGE dilema

If HODGE does not open HADDIN must be the only change next game

A more restrained and disciplined India won the 4th game
SERIES now 2-1 with 3 games left
My prediction AU 4-2

All fair calls Mal, but in My opinion, haddin should have been in for hodge and that is the only change- at the moment. Hopes did really well last night i reckon even though he looked ordinary early- kahn and rp singh bowled excellent death yorkers- even gilly gilly cant hit a yorker for six. gilly down the order is an option though no doubt

STUMPY
Yep they bowled terrific yorkers
BUT its easier bowling yorkers at non 6 hitters
There is more pressure bowling them if you are staring at SIMMO/GILLY/+ HUSS in the last few overs

As a bowler in my day it was intimidating if a known hitter was at the crease
The concentration is on not getting blasted this creates pressure on a bowler

We lost a 20/20 series in South Africa because we didnt really have 6 hitters in the later order.

Good point mal, but your Gilchrist shift does create another problem - who will open with Hayden?

Push Clarke up? Haddin or Hussey to open? I'm interested to see your solution!

PS - pls don't say open with Watson... 8)

Next generation

JAQUES
RONCHI
watson
BLIZZARD

Short term

HODGE + GILLY to swap

Others mentioned are CLARKE + HUSSEY
Agree they are both very very good options
BUT as John Laws once said " WHEN YOUR ON A GOOD THING STICK TO IT ."
Meaning they are that good in the midde order dont change

The same theory could be applied to Gilchrist at the top of the order. He has batted there for 99% of his International ODI career, why drop him now?? I think he is of more benefit to Australia early on during the power plays.

I like the idea of Blizzard having a crack, but hasn't he only really had one good innings - against SA in the Twenty20 cup IIRC? I don't think he has played many ING Cup games either...

This could be a good oppurtunity for someone like M. Cosgrove to really stand up and push for selection in the ODI side. If he has a good first half of the domestic season leading up until Christmas, he'd really be pushing for a spot in the ODI side by the time the CB Series comes round.

Big call for Blizzard, he only played seven Ford Ranger games, with highest score of 37 (s/rate of74), and the Twenty20 results are inflated with that on innings (89 off 38) hes made only 25 runs in his other 3 innings.

You're right, he is very inexperienced but long term i think Mal is right. He is going to be a brilliant player IMO.

If you are going to bat Gilly down at 6 or 7 then i would say push Clarke up to opening and leave Hussey in the middle order to do his usual work.

What might be the equation with GILCHRIST
If he is intending to play this season and then retire, leave him at the top of the innings
If the intention is to play 2-3 years, then perhaps for his overall longevity number 7 beckons.
Its not a problem at the moment as the team keeps winning

Australia currently demolishing India.

India reeling at 7/105 (27 overs)

Johnson damaging with 3/19 off 6
Lee with 2, Georgey Hogg 1.
