admission prices to the races

a mate of mine has just got back from melbourne & he got to caulfield yesterday & the price to get in was $50.00 , now this bloke is a $1.00 e/w bettor, he went there with $60.00 thinking at worst it would be $20.00 to get in & he'd have $10.00-$15.00 for food & drink & bet with the rest, so he ends up spending an afternoon in a pub in melbourne.

now as some of you know i'm going to melbourne in november to the wrestling & thought i'd spend the saturday at flemington but if the price is somewhere around there i'll take little bayman to the zoo instead

how can they justify an entrance fee of that magnitude ?
i think (the last time i looked) the $9.00 to get into the races here is outrageous

bottom line is they want you to spend $50.00 to get in their to lose your money

SAJC ADELAIDE CUP as an example
The logic from the raceclubs is that about 10000 roll up on the day @$25 approximately
They fill up the course and count the $$$ from admission fees
Thats a short term windfall for the club, the admin is stoked
Thats good on that day, theres enough people prepared to pay that for that entertainment
Theres a few who will boycott the meeting however as stated

Trouble is what about the other meetings during the year when racecourses resemble ghost towns, when punters are ripped off paying about $10 admittance fees.

bottom line is you spend $10 to get in there to lose your money

Anyway, tell your mate to stop whinging, we went to the Tapestry Bar for a funtion yesterday with the promise of a bookie & all day beer. Don't know what happens to beer when it hits a plastic jug, turns into some sort of urine. Then we found out Hollywood Syd was the bookie betting 160% so we ended out with fake beer & a fake fielder.

I went to the Melbourne Cup with the family in the 90s
Cost us megadollars to get in
Had a collect early and the pay out queue was massive
Line ups at ther TAB were too deep
I had an early bet in the Cup and we spent the day at the bar and the wife played pokies
We eventually left just after the Cup which we watched on TV [too crowded outside]
The grog + food was too expensive
It was an ordinary day
Ive had better fun in pubtabs on norMAL days of races.
Other people I talk too love the day but not me.

If they ever charged me
$6 dogs
$5 trots
$9 races
I would never bother going as its a conflict of interest

I go on course GDP and invest about $100 to $500 a meeting
That equates to $10-$50 TAB commissions for the club on my modest investment portfolio
To jeopardise that by scrounging $5 admittance fee is a conflict of morals.
I also buy a drink
I also buy dinner
On a nor MAL night at GDP Im worth in profit terms a lot more than the $5 to get in

thats where your wrong he loves going to the track big days/nights or not, it gives him an outing & he loves hurdle racing especially & he picks his horses/dogs on his own & he has his $1.00 e/w on them (not really but he thinks they are on)

he keeps telling me we can go to moonee valley on our way to the wrestling because he wants to drive & walk under the track as he sees on tv, i told him it'll depend on what time the trots start, in short he wont get boored

it lowers gradually from there to the 'cheapseats' $50.00 & before you all say you have paid the same amount to see that remember they are paying airfares,accomodation etc etc & they have to cover costs & make a profit, the racing club(s) have increased their price at least 5 times to run a meeting that costs no more than any other time of the year

ok, sounds fair. I used to bet with my Dad when I was that age as well, loved the gee gees (he was a bookie) but my kids get bored after a race or two, seen one horse seen em all I guess. Still, would'nt even attempt to take the kids to a meet in the carnival, Christ, can't move yourself let alone carting a kid around. I can still remember seeing 7 Melbourne Cups from 64 - 71 in the stands & they were'nt a pleasent place to be as a youngster.

anyway it was a sensational day, you could take your own grog (new Garbage bin filled with Crowns and Ice ) and food and also go into the members to watch the races (only saw the derby live)...I had a photo with Susie O'Niel and she signed my form guide, shoke hands with Crawf and had a beer/chat with Andrew Demetriou

couldnt recommend going to a day of the Spring carnival more....these days arent about the punters Mal, if they are serious punters they will be members and get in for free anyway....

I hear what your saying DUTCHY its a day for the party people the affluent and the drinkers
The entertainment makes for a good day
Its just that a day like that is not in the mode of the BAYMANS + MALS who just want to punt.

My point is what about norMAL days when you pay about $10 admission for no
entertainment excepting the actual racing, way way to much to pay

As a teenager we used to pay a few bucks to get into the flat at racecourses
There we would stoke up the barbie,have a tinnie or 2+ kick the footy around and make a day of it.
The admission was substantiated by the fun we had
Paying extra $$$ to get to the Grandstand enclosures was bullshit as far as we were concerned.

I would think that for Serious punters,
On track Caulfield cup day would be the last place they would want to be anyway.
With telephone and Internet betting these days the Best place to punt is at home like i do now.
I used to Religously go to GDP EVERY Saturday night for about 20 years to Punt But now only go now and then just for the night out as Punting from home is just so much easier. Also 1 bookie betting 150% is no incentive to go anymore and he doesn't even bet on the interstate trots anymore.

AS for the $50 to go to Caulfield Cup, well i suppose its all about supply and Demand just like the AFL with the Grand Final.
Having visited many city and country Race/Trotting tracks in NSW and VIC in the last few Years, My 2 best value for money Tracks would be Globe Derby Park (STILL only $5) and Pentrith Trots (FREE Admission ALL meetings). Both Tracks provide an Excellent view of the races and provide Very Reasonably Priced Casual Dining Facilities.

I agree with Jackpot re attending the track. I also used to go to Globe every sat. night but over the last 3 years have only been to the Cup meetings and the Inters when they were on.
No incentive whatsoever to attend, especially in the middle of winter.

save money in fuel driving to track - plus you dont have to put up with moron drivers and road rage - so its also better for stress
save on admission prices
save on food and drink
no line-up in getting a bet on
form guides are everywhere on the net, sometimes hard to find on-course if dont have a race-book
