MOWERS! 2 Stroke or 4 Stroke?

Postby Dissident » Thu Oct 25, 2007 4:42 pm

Hey all

Going to do my old man a favour and get my OWN mower. Question is do I get a 2 stroke or 4 stroke one? I heard that 2 stroke engines spin faster, but a 4 stroke has better torque and can cut things like wet grass better.

Thing is, I already have a Ryobi lawn trimmer which is 2 stroke - would be nice to use the same fuel. BUT if it's not the way to go, I won't.

Might head to Bunnings after work. Any thoughts?

Cheers =)

Definately 2 stroke.
Unless your lawns need to be overly manicured it shouldn't matter.
Just go with the most convenient.

I've always found which fuel it runs on irrelevant.

Just make sure you get one that has a LARGE opening through to the catcher. Many are staggeringly small and restrict the flow of your cuttings - a pain in the arse when it's even slightly wet lawn as it clogs up really quickly.

Have a look at a few and you'll start to see the difference.

I don't think it's automatic that if you buy a two stroke you'll definitely be able to use the same fuel. I have a feeling my old mans 2 stroke mower runs a different ratio to his whipper snipper...

I have a four stroke, but given my time again would most likely opt for a two stroke...

I heard on TV recently that 2 stroke mowers are eventually going to be taken off the market. They create something like 10 times (dont quote me!) the amount of pollution a 4 stroke does. Other countries have already banned them.

Yeah I think Victa is the reason Australia still has so many - being able to produce lightweight yet powerful mowers.

Do what i did mate - when my mower broke down, i ditched it and hired a guy to do it. $25 for front and back, all edged and cuttings taken. He used to come every fortnight in summer, once a month in winter. One of the best decisions i ever made. I hate mowing lawns!!!

Wiyh out a doubt, 4 stroke, easier to start, uses less fuel, makes less noise, more torque= doesn't die as easy in heavy grass, more reliable, I've owned both, and when I still worked as a mechanic worked on both, I'll never go back to a 2 stroke.

If you want a good one you can't go past a Honda, they're like the Rolls Royce of mowers, and the bit extra you spend now you'll more than save over the years, and a Honda will most likely out last you if it's maintained properly.

I believe that 4 strokes cope better with being used only episodically and with being left for a few months between mowings.

I've taken it a step further. I have an electric rotary mower I bought 20 years ago - I brushed the dust and cobwebs off it the other day and turned it on for the first time in two years and it worked perfectly even in the foot high grass. [It was made in NZ.]

It should work well in the foot high grass, if its from NZ its probably designed for mowing sheep

Agreed. I have a Honda 5.5hp. Powerful, reliable and only use it to cut the verge about 3 times a year. Starts 1st time every time.
