What's happening @ South?

Postby Rushby Hinds » Mon Oct 29, 2007 3:17 pm

Keep hearing rumours that a lot of their better players have left South, and/or are actively shopping themselves around to many other SANFL teams.

No name, but one reason given was "sick of the losing culture".

Strikes me as very odd, do the current not happies have no faith in Jack? Or is it the other way round, the club is giving the DCM to regular "not the sort of player we want at our club" type people?

- or is it all BS....

They can have him, gets plenty of the ball but has horrible disposal. one of the main reasons he was left stranded on 99 games.

Then how did he get to 99 games in the first instance?

The same way that plenty of younger players with poor disposal have. Matt Connell finished on 99 games also. surely you're not disappointed on missing out on him :wink: .

If rumours are correct, Clarke will be joined @ North by former South and Swans ruckman Stephen Doyle.

Maybe that's why Wakelin retired!

Not at all - I leave the recruiting in the clubs hands as they seem to be pretty good at it. :wink:

It's interesting that whenever a player is recruited they are a gun and whenever they go elsewhere they weren't up to it. 99 times the league coach said he was up to it, which means he can't actually be that bad, IMO.

Yes and no I'd say mate, 99 league games with an average list might mean a player isn't as good as say a 50 gamer with the Leagues best list ... Not saying it was the case, but it's probably worth looking at individual cases a little closer.

So for North
Wakelin= Doyle
Clarke=Bamford
Hart=O'brien
leaves only 1 replacement to be found for Howard and that'll just about be the end of Norths recruiting for next year. :wink:

No doubt at all mate, but 99 times isn't like he stumbled in for a few games or even a year or 2. There's 5 or more season of consistent league footy which to me suggests he has at least some talent.

Yeah no question .. I must admit I never rated him when he was with the Cats (even rated him lower than Spriggs), but as you've said, 99 games means he must have had something going for him for at least a couple of seasons.

Still not convinced that Torney won't turn his back on South and play for North yet either... :evil:

Clarke started in Geelong in 1999, finished with Carlton in 2005 (2 seasons there).
Played 101 games for 41 wins, 59 losses and 1 draw.
Very consistent in 2000, 2001 & 2002 when he played 22 games each year.

Would have thought Glenelg might have got him since he owns a business down there, same about Torney, I haven't heard that he's in the running with us.

As much as we would like it, I don't think it will happen, if south miss out on Torney which I highly doubt I believe his 2nd club of choice would be the Bays

Agreed, mine you the way Glenelg have gone with Clarke and O'Brien who both narrowed down their choices to between North and Glenelg perhaps we're in with a shot after all! :wink:
And to think they could have had Gill before we got to him a couple of years ago too. :shock:
Thank christ someone down there doesn't know what they're doing. :D

But what about waiting till after the drafts for some younger talent, you'll have no room left by then.

These days you can't afford to wait till after the draft otherwise you're just left with the dregs or players in positions you don't need.
I'd say that most clubs would only want to be entering the market after draft time if some players got drafted that they need to replace.
Things are a lot different to 10 years ago.

Plus so far its Banger, Hart, Howard and Wakelin out with only 2 definate ins.

Anyway we should be on the Ins and Outs thread with this talk.

Back to the topic, is a matter of players leaving because they think the club is in disarray or because it will be too hard under Jack? Be ironic if some of the players that go were the players causing angst for Pyman.
Perhaps they should have held onto Pyman if the players were going to go anyway?

i think that the players that are leaving are the ones who were causing Pyman grief. Also a couple of players who were left in the reserves for far too long.
