2024 AFL Silly Season

Talk on the national game

Didn't they used to have a fairly simple system of if they non-FS team, before the draft, could declare they were going to use pick x on the player and the father-son team could use their next pick either in that round or early the next. To stop shenanigans, the first team was then obligated to take that player.
Re-introduce something like that and get rid of this convoluted points and collecting lower picks circus. It might also get clubs thinking about the value of trading future picks.

I reckon he'll go down as one of the great "what-ifs" of the Adelaide footy club, had a shocking run with injury.

Said it many times on here, never been a fan even before he was drafted

Then you are a terrible judge of a footballer.

Haha ok, given I watch them and him far more often than you, I’ll bow to your better judgement ;) After all you do barrack for Collingwood so know everything about football.

His win/loss ratio wouldn’t be great reading.

That rules him out because he’s barely played due to injury #-O

Whoever bids on Ashcroft should get those picks, say North at pick 2 get 27,34,42,60 and North get the next clean Selection 3

Does that make it fairer?

This doesn't work (despite LM, Booney and Broad all agreeing with it).

Say ashcroft is a 'natural' pick 2.
North bid on him, and lions match.
North now get pick 3, plus a pick 2 worth of additional picks.

So why has north gone from 2500 draft points (pick 2), to 4500 worth of draft points (pick 3 plus the 25000 in matching picks)?

What will actually happen now is pick 1 is used, as they are only risking 500 points in 'over-bidding', knowing that if the lions match, they'll gain a further 2500 points worth of picks (by picking up pick 2, and 3000 points in matched picks).

Your system will lead to clubs overbidding in the hope that they effectively double their own draft hand.

The premise of the system works, ie: let the player get bid on where they naturally would go, and then clubs can match.
If you don't like the bundling of points you can put a cap on how far behind your first pick can be. IE: bring in a rule that says the 'main' part of the matching must be from the same round of picks, or something like that.
Or get rid of father son altogether.

But to say an unrelated club gets an increased draft hand seems crazy to me.

Good point, maybe just the next pick then, say North bid at 2 and instead of that pick 27 being swallowed by the AFL they get it as compensation for not getting the player they wanted. Not perfect but unless you get rid of F-S then I don't see how you can make it "fair" or you just let every club have one rort a year whether its F-S Academy Zone etc.

Krueger, Bytel and Eyre not offered contracts for next year.

Room for Hayes (who if could stay fit) could be a great pick up or Tomlinson.

You can’t compare their career trajectory at the moment.

One was an AA last year

And the other was going to be without a club if they didn’t get traded.

Anyone who watches footy in 2024 has Houston miles ahead of Daniel. Miles.

Daniel is an upgrade, I've said that, he's hardly the ball user Houston is in the way the game is now played. Sure, you need Daniel giving it to Houston but they aren't comparable in value or desirability.

Never said they were similar, they both bring different things to their teams.

Not really - it's still give and take, it's not like the "rich" clubs are just getting all the top end talent and not having to part ways with something, or that the other club isn't compensated.

I think youre wrong here Bedge. No way is Bailey Smith only worth pick 17, bulldogs get shafted because he wants to go to Geelong and thats the best they have because theyre a high end team. If he wanted St Kilda Bulldogs wouldve got pick 7 for him. This happens all the time, Jeremy Cameron, Dangerfields etc etc

Its not even what the teams end up giving up but the sheer fact they get the oppurtunity at the 'better players' at their peaks.

Look at this year's trade week. Undoubtedly the two best players available were Dan Houston and Bailey Smith...... now i know Dan Houston didn't pick a team but clearly he was never going to the Kangas or Saints, he rolls up at the biggest Victorian club who consider themselves in a premiership window still. Bailey Smith ends up nominating Geelong another side well and truly in the premiership window. Kanagas left to pick up Parker at the back end of his career. Daniels who was dropped from his side last year and Darling......well.

You can then throw in Barrass, comes back to Victoria and chooses arguably the 'hottest' team to be at in Victoria.

Over in the west the player to go to that state was Shai Bolton, he ends up at Fremantle who are so much further ahead of West Coast.

I think it will have to get to a point where you can select the state to come home to but then have no say in the exact club you want to go to.
